I Brel at Brel. 8.30pm—midnight. l3 Jun. Free. Fortnightly. With a live set from Medicine Room on bongos. guitar. drum and vocals. And on the tlipside of the Brel disc. DJ Frank Murphy spins some motherfunkin' grooves on alternate weeks. This time it's a celebration of the West End Festival. with Frank spinning live on Radio Mawnetic from 9.00pm to lam.

I um at the Halt Bar. 5pm—l lpm. Free. Weekly. Electro. new wave. breaks. disco. techno soul and rock'n‘roll. all mixed together by the loving people from Gum: Kid Twist. Miss Bent Youth and the Jerk. We are not worthy. man.

I The Funk Stop at Moda. 9pm~lam. Free. Weekly. Ally Sandler and Richie McColm play all the very best in motown. funk. soul and disco to an appreciative mixed crowd in this beautiful Merchant City bar. Sophisticated. classy and soulful.

I Kevin Austen at Nieo’s. 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. Chart music and drinks promos all night long. A winning formula. judging by the business of this bar.

I Kev Dillon at Bar 10. 7pm—late. Free. Weekly. lf ragga. 2-step and hip hop is your bag then fill it up with Kev Dillon and his Thu nights in the beautiful bar up the lane.

I The Lansdowne Sessions at the Lansdowne Bar. 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. Jonnie Five and Brendan Hessle (Juice) get the funk llowin' with retro electro pop and breakers classics in this classic West End bar.

I Martyn at Cul de Sac. ()pin—midnight. Free. Weekly. You can't keep a good thing down. The Jengaheads are one of the hardest working outfits in town. and this pre-club set from this half. Martyn. is consistently great. Drop by the lane tonight.

I Mark Robb at Moloco (West End). 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. DJ Mark Robb transforms this ex-pakora bar into a time machine for the night. revisiting the funkiest years humanity has yet experienced. Iixpect widespread merry- making.

I Nico’s at Nico's. Opin—midnight. Free. Weekly. Get into Nico‘s fora cheesy pep talk before heading out to disgrace yourself in a Sauchiehall Street club or kebab emporium. Classy.

I Spy at Spy. 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. Simon Cordiner (Traxx) does his thang and delivers some quality house and funky grooves.

I User Friendly at Blackfriars Basement. Spin—lam. £3. 6 Jun. Monthly. An audio visual extravaganza with breaks. techno. projections and art installations. So far. the venture has been successful. with rapturous nights already having taken place in Feb and Mar.

I Virunga at Brel. 9pm—midnight. Free. 13 Jun. Fortnightly. DJ Tchico serves up the best in ghetto grooves and Caribbean beats.

I Come Play? at the Tunnel.

l lpm—3am. £4 (£3: free with Snapfax before midnight). Weekly. Tunnel regulars Kevin McFarlane and Scott Mackay. plus Stephen Lee in room two. spin upfront house and classic dance tracks.

I Columbian at the Asylum Back Room. 8pm—lam. Free to CL'SL' members. £1 otherwise. Weekly. Put some breakin' funk in your trunk. with this entertaining night of student madness.

I Cube 1st Birthday Party at Cube. l().3()pm—4am. Entry by invitation only. 2() Jun only. Matt Le Funk. Kris Keegan. Geoff M. Martin Hesketh. DMG and Jim Da Best all get together fora bit of a bash on this night of birthday cubism. Crazy drink promotions and the general sense of hedonism surrounding the club ensures that this will be a party to remember.

I Freakmoves at Glasgow School of Art. 1 [pm—3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. Dema and Mr Nice once again invite us to take a trip down the funky lane. As two of Glasgow‘s most skilled hip hoppers. they've got the skills to pay the bills.

I Homework at Vault. l lpm—3am. £5 (£4). Weekly. Ian and Stevie man the box. so all insecurities over the tunes are dispelled. This night aims for student happiness without compromising the quality levels.

I Hype at Cube. 1 |.3()pm—3am. £3 (£2). Weekly. Jim Da Best teams up with the Hype crew to put on a night of twisted. ultra-funky house. Plenty of cheap booze makes this a fun night out. I LiveVEvil at Club Budda. Next date 27 Jun. Monthly.

I Locked at Ad Lib. l lpm-3am. £4 (£3). 13 Jun. A quality night of deadly heatz and bass in a drum 8; bass stylee from Queen B (Behave?) and Deadly (Rub A Dub).

I Off The Hook at Barfly (formerly the 13th Note Club). llpm—3am. £7 (£5). Weekly. Get in on a piece of the avant-action. as the Off The Hook crew twist hearts and minds. Confuse your ears. baby.

1 lpm—3am. £5. 20 Jun. Monthly. A fine pedigree Al Kent and Stevie ‘Sole‘ Middleton take us on a soulful journey through house. underground in Mitchell Lane to a trendier-than-thou crowd. Not bad at all.

I Sidewinder at Canvas. 8pm—late. £5. Weekly. All hail the new king of Glasgow jazz nights. The musical policy is anything with a groove or anything that'll make you move. so what better opportunity to soak up the fine surroundings of the inimitable Arta? Get the funk out.

I Skint at the Cathouse. l lpm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. Very much a night to reflect what's going on in Glasgow at the moment. Tough chemical breaks and beats. rock and indie for a crowd much like the one outside the Gallery of Modern Art.

I Soul Shaker at Mas. l lpm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. An undiscovered gem. We have a mixed bag of electro. techno. house and funk courtesy of Dirty Larry and Danny Two-Stroke. Not bad at all for a Thu.

I Trash at Trash. |().3()pm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. More of a spectacle than a night out. with drunken students and footballers from wall to wall. Insanely cheap drinks mean a huge queue almost every night. Mind the bouncers. though. I 1210 at Babaza. 8pm—3am. Free before 1 lpm. £4 (£3). Weekly. Literally underground club housing some huge vocal house and garage loveliness deployed weekly by Ian Thomson and Vance.

I Nice Ass Nice at the Velvet Rooms. 1 lpm—3am. £4 (free with student ID). Weekly. Don't be fooled by the plush interior: the Velvet crew could teach the young whippersnappers on the scene a thing or three about alcoholic dancing. L'pstairs. rotational residents take it in turns to provide the commercial R&B and hip hop selections. Downstairs. James Doc Jnr plays Ibiza anthems all night long.

I Venom at Alaska. I lpm—3am. £3. Weekly. New gay night for the funky club up the lane. It's glamour with a hammer. and this celebration of sexuality is resolutely straight-friendly.

Chart & Party

I Madhouse at Shack. |().3()pm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. A massively popular night. Student anthems are duly deployed by DJ CJ.

I Loveshack at Fury Murry's.

l lpm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. Going through a renaissance in recent years. Fury's is peopled week in week out by a crowd that want a night of unpretentious partying. Jim and Phil wow them with a blend of commercial classics. vintage indie and a touch of disco for those in sequins.

a! Shake the Disease Another pant-wettingly good line-up with Richard Fearless (Death in Vegas). Andrew Weatherall (pictured) and jungle pioneers Shut Up And Dance. Need any more encouragement? Queen Margaret Union, Sat 8 Jun. as Masters of Groove Masters of Groove features the world's most recorded drummer, Bernard Purdie. accompanied by Blue Note's Reuben Wilson and Grant Green Jr on Hammond organ and guitar respectively. Purdie played on classics such as “Sex Machine'. “Shaft' and ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised'. So he’ll be good then. CCA, Sat 8 8 Sun 9 Jun.

is ill-Karate Blowing up the spot known as the Riverside Club is the excellent DJ Format, whose ability to work a crowd has been cemented through years playing records in sweaty hip hop clubs down south. Riverside Club. Sat 75 Jun.

at The Chill on the Hill A bit of an institution for clubbers in the West End area at the time of the festival. Sit on the grass verge and listen to the hip retro sounds of Hush Puppy. There’s also a number of attractive guests to make things even more blissed out. Brel. Sun 76 Jun.

Abnormals Anonymous Isobel Campbell from Belle & Sebastian performs a selection of Billie Holiday tracks with her compadre Bill Wells. whilst there is a showing of Derek Jarman's film Broken Eng/ish elsewhere in this cavernous space. 80 if you like your club nights with an intellectual edge. this is the one for you.
