STAND-UP GLEN WOOL
The Stand, Edinburgh, Sat 9 Mar 0000
Compere Jane Mackay deserves ten gold stars and a lifetime supply of 80/- for her latest performance at the Stand. Not only did she confirm her status as an acid-tongued. fang-toothed comedy goddess. she also managed to dispel the palpable tension in the room when a woman suffered an epileptic seizure. With the incident dealt with swiftly and sensitively by staff and audience members. Mackay returned to what she does best: hurling deadpan abuse at the paying public with increasing venom as those velvety pints flowed.
As ever. the line-up was mighty diverse. Rotund ba‘heid with the voice of an angel. Ricky Callan invited us on a scatological romp. that included a wee- inducing musical odyssey through the shite factory. Mark Felgate. the bastard son of Su Pollard and Doc Cox. had us nibbling hungrin from his paws with a routine packed with uncanny v0ice effects and self-effacing pathos. ln contrast. Colin McGill eased into a gentle meditation on the fate of the neds (consign to a
burning pyre his philanthropic conclusion).
Headliner Glen Wool filled the comedy cavern with his laid-back presence. Having mugged and drawled through a little bit of politics, brilliantly deriding the war on terror, Wool went on to treat us to a fifteen minute anecdote about finding a spot on his cock. Even the women in the audience c0uld be seen crossing their legs and wiping their eyes when Wool described how the doctor inserted a long. thin instrument into his iap's-eye. Clearly. it is easier for a camel to pass through
the eye of a needle . . .
