DANNY BHOY
Queen Margaret Union, Glasgow, Thu 14 Feb; Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy, Fri 15 Feb; Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh, Sat 16 Feb; Rothes Halls, Glenrothes, Sat 23 Feb
With Pop Idol dominating the viewing figures and the tabloid front pages it seems surprising that there isn't already a comedy version on our screens. According to stand-up star Danny Bhoy. there soon will be. ‘Apparently it's being developed at the moment.‘ he says. 'I don‘t know how good it's going to be. because even good jokes don‘t work that well on TV. and bad ones work even worse . . . and there's going to be a lot of bad ones. I don't know who they're going to get as the pundits. because they're going to want a nasty Nigel. and the comedy promoters I know are all like nasty Nigel.‘

Bhoy won the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award in 1000 and. while not exactly an automatic ticket to stardom. it gave the Moffat-born comedian a substantial boost. After a successful run at last year's Edinburgh Festival. he rias pee.“ headlining gigs across the COLintry and over the channel lin(:|ii(1iiig one night entertaining Brussels bureaucrats). And his gigs are a constant \.'.'oik ll‘ progress. ‘This tour will be ab0ut half and half, still using the material from the last testinal. but working in new stuff. Plus | always improvrse about a quarter of the set. I tend to get some of my best stuff from a gig that's gone really well where 'l‘r‘. brain‘s been working overtime — or from a gig that's not going great and you get that feeling, "holy fucking shit. peOple are staring at me. I've got to say sorrietiirrig
funny!"'
It has to be said that onstage Bhoy rarely looks particularly panicked. He's got an easy. charismatic manner that makes even the cliches of audience liariter seem entertaining. But unlike many of his colleagues. who seem to \.l(‘.‘.'. starsl up as the first rung on a career in light entertainment. Bhoy seems pretty ltgttit)‘. to stay where he is. ‘It is a contentious issue.‘ he says.
