STAND-UP

An Australian living in Britain is subjected to certain stereotypes. If I had a quid for every time I’ve been slapped on the back in the pub and greeted with ‘g’day mate’ I’d be far too wealthy to bother to write this piece. And just for the record, I’d never heard the form of address ‘cobber’ until I came here, and never seen a man with corks strung from his hat anywhere but on British telly. Nevertheless, we Aussies like to play up to the stereotype now and again. All, that is, but Sarah Kendall.
This young comic, whose Fringe
show War played to very receptive audiences during the Festival, doesn’t do the Aussie culture clash routine that’s become so familiar to British audiences. ‘I just don’t do the fish out of water stuff,’ she says. ‘You have to play it unnecessarily dumb, and the cultures really aren’t as different as
some people like to make out, anyway.’
This is quite characteristic of this intelligent and observant comic. War was a cut above the average Fringe show in its political observations. A monologue that addressed the entire subject of war and included references to the history of Nazism still contrived to be a very funny gig. Kendall feels that she can’t incorporate this kind of material into her much shorter stand-up act at Jongleurs, so she’s written an entirely different set. ‘There’s nothing to bring a comedy audience down like references to the Nazis,’ she says. ‘All the same, the show played surprisingly well in Germany. I was amazed at how cool they were about it. But when I thought about it, well of course they’re going to be cool. It’s a ‘tragedy past time’
sort of thing.’
The new act will also contain plenty of political references. ‘I don’t always do political comedy, but the events of the past few months have made me so angry about George W. Bush. The war was quite upsetting; I’ve never felt so helpless as I watched it happen. Bush is just obviously a puppet for big business; they don’t even try to be secretive any more, it’s quite open. And he’s so stupid. He’s always putting his foot in it. He’s the
Dan Quayle of his generation.’
But the act isn’t simply a tirade. Kendall’s work includes many pop culture references. ‘I’m a big movie girl. I go about three times a week. I’ve already written a bit about Lords Of The Rings. I watch a lot of telly and MTV, and I like to talk about that stuff in my act.’ So look out for the variety and quality of this act, but don’t expect her to give a XXXX if you call her
