Bargain hunter
If you’re in the market for a good deal, you need to be in the market. Words: Carolyn Aitken
‘ urry. hurry Mrs Murray!‘ being yelled at several million decibels . . . whelks. muscles and candy apples galore . . . an array of
tasteful Old Firm furnishings for the bairn‘s room every second
stall: oh the joy of the Glasgow markets!
No, really. With markets held every day of the week and with secondhand/charity shops sprawled across the city. Glasgow is hoaching with bargains. if you know where to look. The Barras. at over 80 years old. is Glasgow's most famous. Situated in the Gallowgate. with nine distinct markets. it‘s open every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. You can buy absolutely anything at knock-down prices, including records. clothes. food. furniture and electrical equipment.
Paddy’s Market. which is down a lane just off the Briggait. may look like a bomb has hit it. but if you peer beneath the debris and junk. you'll find plenty of goodies. You can buy everything from retro clothes. sewing machines. computers and toiletries to furniture. But take care if you plan a visit: the area does have a lot of junkies and dodgy characters floating around. despite its relatively central location.
Blochairn Market every Sunday in the east
