NEW COMEDY CLUB JONGLEURS
Opening weekend Fri 11—Sat 12 Jan, Jongleurs, Glasgow.
Colin Murphy: tiptoeing on the cusp of a big break
For some it was about as eagerly awaited as a hernia op. for others it was the glamour opportunity to break into the big time. Regardless of this mixed outlook. UK chain Jongleurs is opening its first comedy club north of the border in Glasgow. What will be one of fourteen clubs nation-wide. Jongleurs chose Glasgow because of the City's Vibrancy and sooable atiriospliere. The venue itself is situated in the former Apollo theatre and is part of a growing entertainment Mecca in the new UGC building on Renfrew Street.
Naturally any commerCial chain with financial clout will have its Critics. its a cafe'; ‘It's a nightclub'; “It's too sanitised for comedy': these are just a few of the snide shots levelled at its comedy enVirons. That said. .Jongleurs make no apology for their tireless devotion to entertainment. The comedy empire is unstinting in its determination to give people a good night out fOr their money. Music. food. drinks and daiicing are all trimmings on the package its clients have come to expect. but it is stand-up comedy which is the cruoal element.
The bills Will be impressive. but with a weekend ticket price of $312. that's no less than should be expected. The opening night alone has Northern ireland's Colin Murphy and Canada's Craig Campbell, and general manager Alan Russell can assure consistent high quality of acts. He says: ‘Jongletirs tends to be a showcase or a Circuit for people who are lost about on the cusp of getting their big break on teleViSion. They're Just about on top of their form on the stand-tip circuit.‘ After two hours of top notch stand-up. the floor is cleared and the dOOrs are opened to accommodate 800 bodies dancing to pure. unadulterated cheese.
Jongleurs isn't yoor average comedy club: it's more of an entertainment experience than a comedy show. Laughter is high on the agenda but not all of that will be thanks to the comedians. 'l wowd imagine that by the time the comics. the Budweiser and the crowd have all had an opportunity to meet with one another full-on. that c0uld be quite good fun." says Russell. ‘Quite good fun for the comics as well. because it‘s relatively interactive — in my opinion there's nothing better than a Glasgow crowd heckling. I think the comics will be kept on their toes.‘ (Maureen Ellis)
