GUEST DJ LISA LOUD
Taste at The Honeycomb, Edinburgh, Sun 30 Dec; Inside Out at The Arches, Glasgow, Mon 31 Dec.
Lisa Loud is a manic marvel of self- promotion. A fourteen year career has seen her stamp an indelible presence on the history of house music, with roles as club promoter, DJ and record company executive combining to produce a overreaching presence that’s quite frankly hard to avoid. To raise her profile even further, Lisa is now producing her own music and has her sights well and truly set on being a television presenter.
‘I definitely want to move into TV and the more media-led angle now,’ she says with the same grim determination that no doubt helped forge an enviable career in the record industry, both with her own PR company Loud & Clear and as manager for Pete Tong’s London/FFRR label. ‘I still want to DJ and I still want to very much be part of the great club scene that I’ve been involved with for such a long time but I’ve always been keen on having a media-presence. I’ve used the policy of ‘suck it and see’ in my career really - I’ve said to myself “I fancy doing that” and
then I’ve done it and, at the moment, TV is the highest
thing on my agenda to tackle next.‘
Not that we’re likely to lose sight of Lisa while she decides which TV project is right for her as she’s recently signed with cosmetics company Rimmel to help launch their ‘street brand’ Rimmel London. ‘There are two sides to the Rimmel marketing and promotion,’ she says. ‘Kate Moss has taken the overground side of the campaign and I am, very much, the face of the underground side.’ Essentially this means that while Kate struts across our TV screens, Lisa’s giving her all
on the internet.
MACIELECTRO/TECHNO MY MACHINES Glasgow School of Art, weekly Sat.
My Machines has firmly established itself as a first choice for Glasgow clubbers embarking on a Saturday night out. And. like it‘s downstairs neighbour Divine. the lengthy partnership of Hamish McChlery and Jonnie Wilkes shows no sign of flagging. and recent changes have ensured continued loyalty from the regular attendees matched by an infusion of new blood.
‘I think that a lot of peeple have been noticing the substantial improvement to the scund system.‘ says Wilkes. ‘And that means the crowd can hear all the subtleties in the kind of techno we're playing — I don‘t know what we‘re supposed to call it. machine techno. maybe — which means that we can make the night a more interesting club.‘
These forays into new terriIOry. built in the solid foundation of US and European techno that made My Machine's name. have been well received. ‘l'm not sure why it is. but I think the audience has become mcie receptive tO the more unusual techno we play. and I think that now makes us one of the few remaining clubs that are

Lisa Loud brings the noise
While all this would seem to suggest that Lisa’s image
takes precedence over her musical product, a
dedication to furthering her take on the funky US house model is evidenced by the DJ now producing her own tracks in a studio in Dundee. ‘Miles For Sound’ is the first single, recorded in between DJ dates in Scotland over the summer, and with a string of dates secured north of the border over Christmas and New Year, more tracks from the driven first lady of house are on the horizon. ‘lt’s important to drive your own sound,’ she says, ‘and making records is the way that you do that.’

geared mainly towards techno or electro that take in the more experimental music.’
To mark a year of tweaking the club's formula. My Machines is set to host a Christmas Party. with the resrdents iomed by a top secret special guest who debuted his live techno at the club and is no stranger to Glasgow's techno fraternity.
‘lt's around seven years now that the club has been going and in a way we're treating it as a birthday celebration and Christmas party rolled into one.‘ Wilkes explains, 'so we'll be playing a lot of classic tracks from the last 15 years »— a

As for future plans. the club is set to COntinue its commitment to showcasing live electronic dance musm. ‘When we go to book a guest.‘ Wilkes says. ‘we try to make sure it's for a live set. I think Hamish and l have everything in place with the music. and we have the crowd. so next year we're looking for more and more guests. We've got Luke Slater playing live. and Blake Baxter. We have Anthony Rother too. and Sway/ak are coming back . . . ' And. With a lineup like that. it looks as if My Machines is on course for another good year.
