DRAG DJ TASTY TIM
Luvely at The Honeycomb, Sat 20 Oct. g V g N ib‘éfi'a’ge when guest DJs are like North Atlantic cod stocks (hard to get
hold of, and when you do get them, they’re usually the wrong sort), finding someone who actually lobbies to play at a club is a pleasant surprise. But this was precisely how Tasty Tim, who produces as T-Total, first played at Luvely. ‘My good friend DJ Princess Julia first got me switched onto the club,’ he explains, ‘she told me how great it was, so I basically pestered my agents till they got me the gig! It was FAB and I’m really looking forward to
coming back again.’
Luvely is six in January, and you don’t survive that long without a fair bit of devotion from both promoters and punters. The mixed club began in Club Mercado in 1996, but soon moved to Wilkie House where it established itself as a Saturday night institution. When Wilkie closed down, Luvely, alongside Sublime, went to The Honeycomb. According to back room resident Dean Newton, the move wasn’t without its problems. ‘lt’s been a bit transitional,’ he reveals. ‘We had a bit of a lull for a while, to be honest, but we’re back to full strength now. And the vibe at the moment is
a good as I’ve ever known it to be.’
The Edinburgh scene is largely a dress-down one, but Luvely has long bucked the trend, with theme nights and outrageous costumes almost as central to its vibe as the music itself. After a brief break from the dressing-up theme, August saw it return with a ‘Punks & Princesses’ night, while this fortnight is the intriguingly titled ‘Adam Ant Vs Deviant’.
Tasty Tim, as you might have guessed, is one to make an effort. ‘I always DJ in drag,’ he says, ‘I guess you could say I’m a bit of a “drag addict”.’ You learn to adapt to it, though that doesn’t mean that I don’t take the odd tumble in heels. But sometimes you don’t know you’ve had a good night unless you wake up with a few bruises, now do
you?’ (James Smart)
