Marcel Duchamp once said all painters were stupid. Satoshi Watanabe's exhibition
Hidden Landscapes proves him wrong.
Essentially they are a series of paintings of places and spaces. posSibly lifted from postcards or holiday snaps. The Letivre. Giza. the Ta] Mahal. the rolling dunes ol the desert. The over-familiarity of the images is precisely what fascinates Watanabe. As the title suggests he is looking to tease out a hidden dimension.
Predominantly this is done Via technigue. When you tirst see the paintings they appear to be covered in thin gauze made up of hundreds of dots. Closer inspection reveals that the paintings have been created by peeling away hundreds of dot-shaped stickers underneath the painted surface. In others the process is Inverted. It's a simple technique but the result is Visually disconcerting. The colliSIon of two systems of Visual representation — one graphic. one painterly. produces a peculiar hybrid. The images seem to oscillate. eXisting in a Visual state of flux.
Watanabe's attention to the process of painting. the how. as well as the what. is refreshing. Duchamp would have stopped playing chess to cast his critical eye
