Comedy nights in pubs often start with a Kevin Costner-Field Of Dreams-attitude: ‘if you build it, they will come’. Not so. A venue, sound system, willing comedians and a few flyers doesn’t guarantee anything. What will entice those all- important bums on seats is the promise of a good night where the quality of the acts is more important than the bar takings. Get one right, and the other should, in principle, follow in time.
James Campbell knows only too well about the pitfalls of working pub gigs having compered the now defunct Blackfriars Sunday night. Undeterred by the experience, Campbell believes he has a formula for his new Chambers venture which will build on the mistakes made by others: ‘I’ve been at clubs where I’ve done a 25 minute set, had a really good gig and got a tenner. And you just think, why did I do that? I’m trying pay everybody a guaranteed fee and use sponsors’ money to top that up.’
The new club will be monthly to begin with, a reassuring testing of the water, and more importantly, the line-up will be entirely made up of headline quality acts. Campbell has to come up with this philosophy which he hopes will benefit comedians, audiences and those hard task masters, cash registers. ‘There can’t be any duff nights; if you put on three acts who could all headline, then I don’t see what could possibly go wrong.’
And the ambition doesn’t stop there. With solo shows (Craig Hill and Adam Bloom have been mentioned) and non-politically correct nights (think Scouse tracksuits and bad perms), September will also see the reopening of Blackfriars, only this time on a busier Friday night. The success of these nights ultimately depends on a combination of public demand, venue agreeability and good old fashioned luck. Not a problem according to Campbell: ‘That’s the way comedy works. There’s no money in it; basically you do it because you love it.’ (Maureen Ellis)
