NEW PLAY
GHOST SHIRT
Tron Theatre. Glasgow, Tue 24—Sat 28 Jul (then at Edinburgh Fringe).
Getting burgled is a bummer. You might lose y0ur VCR or your microwave 0r alternatively. and perhaps worse. y0u COuld lose one of those daft things that only mean something to yOu: a framed photo. yOur lucky five p0und note. or the spare key to yOur first car. You'd miss them even if you COuldn't explain why. This was the problem faced by representatives of a native American tribe. the Lacota Sioux who spent five years trying to wrest back a stolen shirt. deposned in a Glasgow museum over a century before. HaVing requested its return in 1995. the shirt was returned by the Glasgow City COuncil. after much wrangling, in 1999.
Director Lu Kemp. one of TAGS newly-appointed assistant directors.
Truly, madly, teepee
whose The Hunting Of The Snark received acclaim on the Edinburgh Fringe two years ago. explains that her devised production is based on the story of the artefact. ‘This is about storytelling.‘ she says. 'A lot of theatre is very fourth wall. it doesn't include the audience. I was interested in something that spoke more
directly to them.‘
Kemp feels that we explain native custom through our own myths. not theirs. ‘We wanted to explore the processes by which peOple explained the shirt.' she says. 'We looked at Hiawatha. because a lot of our perceptions. things like spaghetti westerns. are about the myth. The idea of the native. ecology and various other values came from this poem. It also led to an exploration of the nature of museums. which are like picture books. You see the object. but very few words are used to explain it. you're not given much information' (Steve Cramer)
The grounds are open from (3pm for picnics. and you're advised to bring along rugs to sit on.
