TECHNO HERO DAVE ANGEL Ego, Edinburgh, Fri 30 Mar.
A lot of people are shocked when they find out Dave Angel is actually from Clapham, synonymous as his name is with Detroit techno. And while the London-based DJ admits that he sees the luminaries of the Motor City sound such as Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Derrick May as the real inventors of dance music, his influences are much more diverse than you’d expect
According to Angel, his greatest influence was his dad, a jazz horn player: “003, ya know, he’s the one who actually introduced me to music since I was a baby.’ And his distinctive brand of what he calls ‘funky techno’ is clearly flavoured
by the music of his heroes Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder and George Clinton (with whom he recently collaborated).
Newcomers to Angel, an established player on the international techno circuit, are likely to be blind to the DJ’s chequered past. He spent much of his youth involved in street culture and the crime that went with it. One thing led to another and he ended up serving a few terms in prison. The turning point came in between spells inside. ‘I was waiting for a trial to come up,’ he says, ‘so you can either go out there and get into deeper shit or you can stay at home and make music. I chose the music and I haven’t
looked back since.’
As for the night itself and what to expect from the seasoned pro, just listen to the man himself: ‘Some Dave Angel funky techno with head shots and body blows, ya know. You have to play to the club and that’s it. There’s no half stepping. You have to go straight for the jugular.’
