On the decks

Pink: 'You Make Me Sick‘ (Arista *i) Acclaimed R&B producer Babyface might well know a thing or two about sassy bump and grind but clearly not a great deal about lyrics. The title of the song is rhymed with 'You got me living like a candlestick’. Slick.

Mills 8: Boom: ‘Do You Better’ (Chocolate Boy Recordings ***)

Feelgood UK garage that while revelling

in its two-step euphoria makes a more concerted effort with its vocals.

Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek: ‘The Blast'

(Rawkus it) Hi Tek’s bass shuffle beats

propel the latest release from the duo's debut album Train Of Thought and although there’s plenty of name- dropping and party shouts, this is an uninspiring slice of R&B drenched hip hop.

Pistol Grip: ‘Roll that sh't, Light that sh't' EP (Deph Tone Records whit) A six track EP that rolls with the funky style from the breakbeat cheek of ’Doo

Wah Diddy' to the pumping house disco

of 'Feel The Noise'. Altogether a tidy package.

Jersey Street: 'Disappear' (Glasgow Underground *itti) Soul, jazz, cigarettes and coffee come to mind as ex-Black Science Orchestra keyboardist Uschi Classen tickles the ivories for sultry jazz lady Dawn Zee. Up-tempo on the remix mind.

Dusted: ’Always Remember To Respect

And Honour Your Mother - Part One' (Go Beat *) Choirboy Alan Young celestially renders ’I'd Do Anything’ from the musical Oliver while Paul van Dyk lays on some euphoric trance. If a bag of shit could be pretentious it would be this.

Alpinestars: 'lnterlaker' (faith 8: hope ****) Pumped-up electro breaks and interstellar grooves on the strongest single from the Manchester outfit’s debut album, leaning heavily on the big beats thanks to a remix from Mekon.

Genius Cru: ‘Boom Selection' (Incentive *tint) A prime example of how exciting UK garage can be when it pilfers breaks, beats and samples from hip hop and drum & bass. Innovative and sure to be huge.

Hypetraxx: 'The Darkside' (Positiva *irhk) Pitch black hard trance thuds with 805 retro keyboard wobbles and some grumpy fella going on and on. Great fun.

D/Compute:

'iwiIlpushmyselfintotheforestandwillb

edeadthere' (Mouthmoth ****) More cluttered distorted electro-fuzz- techno soundscapes from this home- grown label. Part industrial accident, part fairytale nightmare, all good. (Mark Robertson and Catherine Bromley)

13th Note Club, weekly Sat atThe 13th Note, Glasgow.

I’m a regular in here every week. I like the music which is mainly soul, funk, rare groove and loose groove, I like the atmosphere and I know a lot of the staff in here as well, so it's a good vibe. - The only other place I go apart from here is Divine at The Art School on Saturday nights and the music there is pretty similar.

There’s a good mixture of people that come here. Some come every week and others are fresh from off the street.

Any good stories? Well, getting thrown out of here for smoking a joint up the stairs, I got told I wisnae barred and I could come back the next day so I spent the night spewing my load in the toilet, full of E and coming out feeling absolutely amazing, dancing for three hours and sweating like a fucker.

| DJ here till midnight on a Saturday and I get Freeform to play what I like, so that I get a chance to dance to it. It's two brothers that are DJing just now one up the stair and one down the stair. They’ve been doing it for years so I'll give ’em 10 out
