The Chronicle of St Machar
Given its first performance last April, appropriately in Aberdeen's St Machar's Cathedral, John McLeod's The Chronicle of St Machar comes to Edinburgh for the first time with an impressive invasion of Aberdonian performers. Aberdeen Bach Choir, Aberdeen Sinfonietta, Cults Academy Junior Singers and bass John Hearne tell the tale, with text by the composer, of the Scottish saint who came from Ireland to Iona with Columba, but built his great cathedral at the mouth of the River Don. McLeod is one of Scotland’s most prolific composers and this cantata is typically full of vivid colour and glorious choral textures.

S. Bach is the lone German in a sea of Russians, with his Art ofFugue, No 8 paving the way for Shostakovich’s Two Pieces for Octet and Symphony for Strings, Prokofiev’s Visions Fugitives and Tchaikovsky’s Andante Cantabile.
