TECHNO HERO
Blake Baxter

Hailing from Detroit — the motor town with the techno sound — Blake Baxter has long been signed to Tresor records in Berlin, home of Kraftwerk and the Love Parade. Thankfully though he's in neither cities next weekend because he's agreed to guest at Glasgow techno night Syntax on the Renfrew Ferry as part of a Scottish tour. Resident DJ Jace seems pretty pleased to have the man on board. 'I was really into the Detroit scene in the early 905/ he explains. ‘I play a lot of electro and I’ve always been into Blake Baxter and Kevin Saunderson and guys like that. To have an influence of that kind come and play is great.’
Baxter began recording techno and house tracks in ’85, as celebrated pioneers like Derrick May and Saunderson were just setting needle to record. His up- tempo beats should fill the 500 capacity Renfrew Ferry with enough techno worshippers to sink the thing but Jace seems relatively relaxed at the possibility of
frenzied punters lobbing themselves into the Clyde with the excitement. ’Well they can if they want to,‘ he laughs, 'as long as they’ve got lifejackets - we don't
want anyone dying on us!’
Syntax’s life story is very much a developing one. Things were running on a pretty small scale until ‘99, when regular gigs at the Art School and QMU upped the tempo. Their recent pre-club night at Bar Jedi is replaced on Friday 6 October by a similar weekly slot at The Halt Bar and the Syntax crew are marking the

occasion with a one-off Friday night set on Fusion (105.4FM) from 11pm—1am, featuring DJ Jace and Nik Craig. Things seem to be looking up, and Jace reveals
that they are on the look-out for a regular all night slot.
‘It has been a wee bit frustrating,‘ he says. ’Besides the pre-club stuff, we've been guesting at various places, but it’s just a case of finding the right one. For the moment we’d rather do some really cool one-off parties than be in a venue that doesn't suit us. But watch this space.’ (James Smart)

The thinking man's hardish houser. Tirno Maas headlines in the Sublime Arch with support from Kev Wright and ldge. Next door in the Manga arch, drum ck bass stars Bad Company, DJ Kid and Tania Swift have it fierce, with additional support front Manga residents (i-Mae and M(‘ Feelman, plus the usual feast of visual entertainments.
