LIVE REVIEW Lee 'Scratch' Per

bad, he is your saviour: Lee ‘Scratch' Perry

Glasgow: Barrowland, Sat 2 Jul * it it *3:

There are two indisputable truths about Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Firstly, that the man is a legend, a true musical visionary; indeed, those proclaiming his genius are almost guilty of understatement. It's like saying Mohammed Ali was a pretty good boxer or that Jimi Hendrix knew a few flash guitar moves. He is the don of dub and, along with Phil Spector, can claim the title of the greatest producer in the history of popular music. He is ‘Scratch' Perry. Respect his authority. Secondly, Perry is equally well-known for being mad. We're talking burning down your studio, walking backwards for three days mad. We’re talking appearing onstage with a three-bar electric fire on

your head mad.

Eccentricity and erraticism are bywords in the Perry myth, so surely the Optimo boys were taking a considerable gamble booking him for a Barrowland gig; would he even show up? And if he did, would it descend into farce? After all, why pay £15 to watch an old man spout gibberish when you can watch the drunks on Glasgow Green for free? But no, in typi- cally perverse form, Perry does appear and proceeds to blow the roof off with a fantastic, warm, funny, and only mildly eccentric performance. Backed by a band so honed and sharp you could perform open heart surgery with them, and a brain-melting mix courtesy of the Mad Professor, Perry is a joy to watch, possessing the stage presence of George Clinton and Little Richard all rolled into one. He hops and skips through revamped versions of classics old and new, occasionally honking a cycle horn like a ganja-crazed Krusty the Clown. Oh, and he's definitely not mad, got that? We know because he tells the devoted crowd: 'I am not mad, I am not bad, I am your saviour.’ And besides, to quote the late, great Prince Buster, ‘If this is madness, then I call it gladness.’ (Neil Ferguson)

I Rumble at The Garage. 11pm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. Absolutely crackers student night, stuffed to the gunnels every time with kids sharking to the sounds of chart hits, indie favourites and Iowbrow house. I Wired at Destiny. 10pm—3am. £2 before 11pm; £3 after. Weekly. Casual night at the wrought-iron exhibition-cum- club, with a dancier music policy. This is the only time when denim and trainers are acceptable apparel here, so you don’t have to iron your Ben Sherman.
