EDINBURGH GALLERIES: NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY continued
Men Of The Clyde: Stanley Spencer's Vision At Port Glasgow (1940—1947) Thu 6 Jul—Sun I Oct. The Portrait Gallery is the home over the next few months of a major exhibition of work by the painter Sir Stanley Spencer (1891—1959). As Official War Artist, Spencer arrived in Port Glasgow in 1940, commissioned to produce a series of paintings of the shipyard workers at Lithgow‘s Yard. He spent the next six years completing the commission, resulting in a series of monumental, frieze-like paintings which capture the labours of the workforce. Showing alongside these works are Spencer’s ‘Resurrection' paintings, created at the end of the war, his personal tribute to the people of Glasgow. William MacQuitty’s famous photographs of Spencer at work in the shipyards and a video made by Andy McGregor specially for the exhibition also accompany the show. Jul. (lnverleith House). LA painter Laura Owens shows new high colour, abstract paintings in her first solo exhibition in Britain. Showing alongside her work is a series of 19th century botanical teaching diagrams by John Hutton Balfour. Elemental Traces Until Mon 18 Sep. (Glasshouse Experience). Internationally acclaimed artists Diana Hobson and Keiko Mukaide create site-specific glass sculptures which combine sound, natural light and glass for the four houses which make up the Glasshouse Experience. Robert Coia Until Mon 31 Jul. Sited beside the Gardens' 35ft fossilist Craigleith Tree, Scottish sculptor Robert Coia has created a 2.5 metre high wooden sculpture for the environmental campaign Trees 0f Time/1nd Place. The campaign aims to encourage everyone to grow at least one tree from seed during their lifetime.

Weegee Re-Viewed Until Sat 5 Aug. Curated by Dr David Hopkins from St Andrews University, an insight into the life and work of Ukraine-born photographer, Usher Fellig. otherwise known as ‘Weegee’. Emigrating to the States in 1906, he worked as a newspaper photographer in New York in the early 1940s and was given access to his own police radio, enabling him to be first on the scene of crime and disasters.
