Men Of The Clyde: Stanley Spencer's Vision At Port Glasgow (1940—1947) Thu 6 Jul—Sun 1 Oct. The Portrait Gallery is the home over the next few months of a major exhibition of work by the painter Sir Stanley Spencer (1891—1959). As Official War Artist, Spencer arrived in Port Glasgow in 1940, commissioned to produce a series of paintings of the shipyard workers at Lithgow’s Yard. He spent the next six years completing the commission, resulting in a series of monumental, frieze-like paintings which capture the labours of the workforce. Showing alongside these works are Spencer‘s ‘Resurrection’ paintings, created at the end of the war, his personal tribute to the people of Glasgow. William MacQuitty’s famous photographs of Spencer at work in the shipyards and a video made by Andy McGregor specially for the exhibition also accompany the show. See preview.
