Four play
It’s that time of year; when every club and its uncle seems to be celebrating their birthday. However, in the case of Sunday night stalwarts Taste, who are six incidentally, you know it will be an event worth turning up for. The big day is Sun 2 Jul and Jim ’Shaft’ Ryan and Dave Piccioni will be joining the residents for the biggest party this side of Monday. Mark Price who, alongside partner in crime Brian Fisher; has been supplying the main room hard house which keeps the club packed to the rafters each and every week, talks us through his four current

I Mondo at Wilkie House. llpm—3am. £7 (£5). 23 Jun. Monthly. Pumping house and trance action from Aldovos, Sergio Amoni and Tencini.
I Nature at The Attic. 11pm—3am. £6. Weekly. Deep and funky tunes at this snug venue from a rotating pool of D15. 23 Jun sees Matt Gray and guests take to the decks, with Subculture’s Harri and Domenic doing their stuff on 30 Jun.
I Noa at Noa. 10pm—3am. Free. Weekly. Jon Flowers in the main room with garage; Paul Dixon through the back with old skool, soul and funk.
I Nomad at Wilkie House. 10.30pm—3am. £6. 7 Jul. Monthly. Tonight’s visitor to Nomad is more of an unknown than their previous guests - given the general calibre though, that’s not an excuse for not checking him out. His name is Danny McMillan, and he records for TCR as well as having a residency at Friction (Fabric). He deals in breaksy, electro-inspired tunes and, if work with the likes of Adam Freeland and Rennie Pilgrem is any benchmark, he must be going places.
I Pillbox at Studio 24. Monthly. Next date 14 Jul.
I Planet Earth at The Citrus Club. 10.30pm—3am. £4. Weekly. From 1976-1989, head back to the era that taste forgot for a pop-punk-disco selection.
I Pure at The Venue. 10.30pm—3am. £9 (£7). 23 Jun. Fortnightly. As the countdown to the last Pure ever continues, it becomes apparent that the posse are treating us to a who’s who of techno talent with an excellent guest every fortnight. 23 Jun sees DJ Rolando, of legendary Detroit crew Underground Resistance, taking his turn on decks, with Dave ‘Red 2’ Clarke on 7 Jul. That’s alongside residents Twitch, Brainstorm, The Bill and Sandy Paris of course, who have a cult status all of their own.
I Queer Friday at Ego. 11pm—3am. £6 (£5) before midnight; £7 (£6) after; £5 with flyer. 7 Jul. Monthly. Another instalment of the club also known as Glamdup, from the people who bring you Queer Sunday. Tonight’s event sees another heat of ‘Queer Stars In Your Eyes’, with faces from the Edinburgh scene strutting their stuff as their favourite po stars.
I Radio Ba ylon at La Belle Angele. 10.30pm—3am. £8 (£6). 30 Jun. Monthly. Filling the guest slot for tonight’s instalment of dance music excellence is one Paul Hartnoll, of techno innovators Orbital, who will be previewing tunes from their forthcoming album. Expect a mixed bag of beats from residents The Merry Pranksters and your hostess Penelope Pornstar.
I Redspin at The Wee Red Bar. 10.30pm—3am. £6 (£5). 23 Jun. Monthly. A breaks selection from residents Colin Millar, Dava and Steve Austin, who welcome one helluva guest this month in the form of DJ Aim, current star of Manchester’s much respected Grand Central label. And, as the guys themselves point out, the bev is damn cheap down at The Wee Red, so lack of cash is no excuse for missing this one.
I Roadblock at Po Na Na. llpm—3am. £3. Weekly. Nicci F digs up the best in funk, disco, house, timeless gems and block rockin’ beats.
I Ruby Fruit at Ego. Monthly. Next date 14 Jul.
I Salsa Viva at The Venue (top floor). 10.30pm—3am. £5; £3 before 11pm. 23 Jun. Monthly. Salsa, cumbia, merengue and mucho mas with Latin expert DJ Coco Vega.
I Sublime at Potterrow Students’ Union. 10pm—3am. £8 (£6). 23 Jun. Monthly. The last Potterrow night for this academic year sees residents Kev and ldge get together for one final trance and techno blast, not forgettiz-g brcakbcat mayhem from Gary Mac attd Felix.
I Sublime at Wilkie HoUse. 10pm—3am. £8 (£6). 30 Jun. Fortnightly. Probably fully recovered front their fifth birthday antics (actually. a. seriously doubt it,
entire personalities are likely to have changed over that weekend), Sublime get back to doing what they do best - full on trance and techno tunes -— with a three- hour set from Idge, ably supported by' Kev and backroom boys Gary Mac and Felix.
I Subtle Logic at Studio 24. 10.30pm-3am. £6 (£4 for those dressed as the opposite sex). 7 Jul. Monthly. Ladyboys Rod and Ross are your hosts for a night of transsexual experimentation on a ‘Thai me up’ theme. They’ll be joined in their paid-for liaisons by special guest Filthy Rich the dirty bitch (Sanctuary, Aberdeen and Cream, apparently) who indulges in three-deck- type mixing.
I Texture at Ego. 10pm—3am. Price tbc. 30 Jun. Monthly. Upfront house from Judge Jules favourites Mitch and Man. I Trancelucent at The Venue (top floor). 10.30pm-3am. £5 (£4). 30 Jun. Fortnightly. Cutting edge house and trance with residents Pete Anderson and Dave S. I Up! at Studio 24 (up!stairs). 10.30pm-3am. £6. 23 Jun. Monthly. A cozy, gay-friendly affair upstairs at Studios with resident Nic Cavendish supplying quality trance and progressive house on decks. They’re expecting Mixmag down tonight, so they’ll have pulled out all the stops (and, if last month’s bouncy castle was anything to go by, it should be a sight worth seeing) for their ‘sports day’ theme. Expect egg and spoon races galore, and the promoters even promise that there’ll be free entry to anyone brave enough to bring their parents with them. Visit www.upclub.co.uk for more info.
