I Paul Cawley at Air Organic. 9pm-midnight. Free. Weekly. In addition to running Soma’s breakbeat sister labels Fenetik and Psy Phi, Paul Cawley warms up for the weekend with brand new breaks, hip hop and drum & bass.
I The Pleasure Lounge at Ad Lib. 5—9pm. Free. Weekly. Something of a pre pre-club this. for those who get tipsy at tea time, with Special Favours resident DJ Mingo-go spinning the usual eclectic selection, from lush pop to electro via ‘phuturistic sleaze’.
I Radar at The Cross Bar. 8pm-midnight. Free. Weekly. Wiggy selection of esoteric dub and progressive techno.
I Russell's at Russell’s. 6pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. DJ Yaw kicks out the best R&B, hip hop and swingbeat.
I Soaterama at Nice ‘n’ Sleazy (ground floor). 8pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. An across-thc-board blend with an emphasis on the unexpected, from punk to drum & bass.
I Stateside Sounds at The State Bar. 4—7pm. Free. Weekly. Paul Shields selects alt-country favourites, rock classics and blues cuts.
I Syntax at Bar Jedi. 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. Nik Craig of Syntax is joined by DJ Trace (Maddog) for a night
of chilled-out electro, filter-heavy disco and techy house.

I The Ark at The Tunnel. 10.30pm—3am. £7 (£5). Weekly. The mighty triumvirate of Scott Mackay, Michael Kilkie and Zammo keep the crowd on their toes with top quality hard house, while Simon Foy kicks out smooth vocal house and garage in the back room.
I Big Daddy at The 13th Note Club. 9pm—3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. Funk and jazz from Graham and Daniel, except they call it buttcrack beats, ring-stinging funk and Nagasaki noodlings. Quite.
I Blowfly Disco at Glasgow School of Art. 10.30pm—3am. £4 (£3). 16Jun. Monthly. Bughouse boys Dan and Chris mix up the down and dirty dance tunes. I Buddasole at Club Budda. 11pm—3am. £5. Weekly. Solemusic head honcho Stevie Middleton with seriously high calibre soulful house and garage. For music lovers.
I Bughouse at Planet Peach. 10.30pm—3am. £6. 16 Jun only. Chris and Dan return to the rotating Substitute carousel for some of their trademark chunky house, aided and abetted by New Zealand’s Chelsea Warner.

PARTY COLLECTIVE The Unit

If you thought the free party ethos died with the invention of the superclub, then think again. The Unit, a Glasgow-based collective, has been organising events at secret locations outside Glasgow for six months now, and it's finding its version of non-commercial clubbing an increasingly popular choice. I joined the regulars on a bus-trip from the city centre to check out
one of their nights.
On arrival at the location, clubbers dumped their stuff and started. Lights went down and sounds came up as projected pictures scanned the ceiling and walls. People acclimatised themselves to the surroundings, their eyes black saucers as they checked out their space.
Outside was a beach lit by a near full moon. Some people gathered on it, disturbing the water by skimming stones across its surface. It seemed like the weekend had chosen to land here. Back inside, the DJ belted out pure funked-up disco, heavy Detroit style, getting scalps tingling and feet itching to hit the dancefloor. What an attack. It was outrageous. Whoops and screams and mad Cherokee Indian noises threatened to drown out the music. So the volume was pumped up to show who was boss.
A new DJ took over, spilling the funk of disco into raw deep house, creating a texture of sound that was ready, rough and reeling. This was house music the way it should sound, the way it did sound in its infancy, a collaboration of Latino jazz, tripped up beats and early Clinton funk.
With the beats boxing and punching each other for position - and being allowed to do so — this whirlygig of mixing burst its banks into the bottom bass of luscious jungle. Not hard hitting, indecipherable jungle, just lush body poppin' jungle, the kind that's sexy to dance to.
Someone really summed up The Unit for me when he said 'At Unit nights, you can dance like no one is watching you.’ I think we all know what he

I EuPhonic at The Temple. 11pm—3.30am. £6 (£4). Weekly. Trevor Reilly, Billy MacAtee and Paul Mendez spin trance and hard house with a funky edge to a packed-out club of up-for-it kids.
I G 'n' D at Archaos. 11pm—3am. £5 (£4). Weekly. Dress smart and prepare to party in the main room with Ryan Kerr and David Gilmore spinning dance classics, garage and house from the commercial end of the spectrum. Betty’s features Ian Thompson with dance classics across the genres, while Paul Traynor provides a collection of R&B, hip hop and soul cuts in the exclusive Skyban

I Mystec at Rocksy’s Basement. 11pm—3am. £8. 16 Jun. Monthly. Dirty Wriggles and Good Hands continue their basement electro-bass and techno fest. I Optimo In Dub Pt.1 at The Glasgow School ofArt. 10.30pm—3am. £8. 9 Jun only. Downstairs, Wilkes and Twitch take a bit of a breather from their usual spazzed-up death disco with a Detroit bass and booty bass set. Rumours of pole dancers jiggling along to the gut- wrenching bass rumblings remain unconfirmed at time of going to press. Up top, meanwhile, the legendary Mad Professor plays live with the Messenger Sound System. Expect raw dub madness from the veteran producer and Lee Perry collaborator.
I Polo Lounge at The Polo Lounge. 11pm—3am. £5. Weekly. Michelle provides a loose mix of house and indie classics downstairs, while Andy rocks the Trophy Room with 80s and 905 hits at this gay venue.

I Psy Phi at Planet Peach. 11pm—3am. £5. 9 Jun only. One of Glasgow’s finest breaks ‘n’ beats nights welcomes a genuine legend in the form of Giles Peterson for some jazzed-up action. According to the Sub gang, this one is set to be a bit special, so get down early to guarantee entry.

I Soulsa at Ad-Lib. 9pm—3am. £3. Weekly. Smooth disco courtesy ofAndy Unger, Rodger, Pete Murphy and Wayne Dixon, who are keen to show that disco doesn’t just mean Daft Punk and their filter-happy peers, preferring instead the genuine classics the revivalists sample and, well, rip off.

I Cheesy Pop at Qudos (QMU). 10pm-2am. £3 (£2) — students and up to four guests. Weekly. Seven years on and rampant hordes of mucky-minded, vodka-fuelled urchins still flock to hear DJ Toast’s Edam selection. A riotous evening, with the emphasis on pure unashamed fun.
