FRIDAY 28 Glasgow I Steve Lacy CCA at McLellan Galleries, 270 Sauchiehall Street, 332 0522. 8pm. £11-£12.50. The stellar soprano saxophonist, reputedly the man who inspired John Coltrane to take up the instrument, kicks off the CCA’s free improvisation and electronica series Free RadiCCAIs. His experience spans the genres and stars of the last 50 years of jazz, from Dixieland to avant garde, from Thelonious Monk to Carla Bley. His compositions often incorporate text from modern writers and he has been building up quite a solo repertoire over the past twenty years. Flautist Dave Heath, who has composed for artists across the spectrum - from James Galway to Evelyn Glennie - as well as playing with the likes of Sting, brings his group to The Jazztrane to join the resident band and hard working MC Freddie King.

I Schlippenbach Trio and Moholol
Beresford/Edwards CCA at McLellan Galleries, 270 Sauchiehall Street, 332 0522. 8pm. £11-£12.50. Pianist, composer and exponent of free improvisation, Alex von Schippenbach makes his long overdue Scottish debut with percussionist Paul Lovens and acclaimed saxophonist Evan Parker (who is also responsible for the programming of the Free RadiCCAls series). Also on the bill is a trio led by South African drummer Louis Moholo, of Blue Notes fame, accompanied by pianist Steve Beresford and bassist John Edwards.

Series programmer Parker gets the opportunity to come into his own in this bill, which features his unique saxophone work, honed through breathing and tonguing techniques, coupled with the computer manipulation skills of Ryan. Part of the Free RadiC CA Is series.
I Yuri Honing Trio Tron Theatre, 63 Trongate, 287 5511. 8pm. £7 (£4). This Dutch trio, on saxophone, bass and drums, return with their unique take on the jazz idiom which, alongside original tunes, features strange versions of classic songs by the likes of ABBA and The Police.
I TakaselMahall and Schlippenbach! Casserley CCA at McLellan Galleries, 270 Sauchiehall Street, 332 0522. 8pm. £11—£12.50. Versatile jazz pianist Aki Takase, who is lauded for her conventional output as well as for the freeform material which will form the basis of tonight’s performance, teams up with bass clarinettist Rudi Mahall of the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. The second pairing of the evening sees German pianist Alex von Schlippenbach joining forces with electro-acoustic artist Lawrence Casserley. Part of the Free RadiCCA Is series.

An all-day celebration of the blues, featuring legendary Chicago guitarist Otis Rush, Louisiana harmonica man Lazy Lester and folk-blues diva Odetta as well as a host of local talent, not least the newly-reformed Blues ‘N’ Trouble, whose lead guitarist John Bruce is one of the forces behind this event. Those of a delicate disposition will be relieved to hear that food and drink will be available throughout the day.

I AMM CCA at McLellan Galleries, 270 Sauchiehall Street, 332 0522. 9.30pm. £11—£12.50. The founders of Britian’s free improvisation movement, AMM have a bit of a reputation for the avant garde, with lyrical silences forming an important part of their performance. Classical influences have also left their mark as band personnel have come and gone, and we detect a touch of Taoism in the title of their Nameless Uncarved Block album.
