Mozart's opera The Magic Flute may not seem the most digestible of shows for audiences aged five and over. But

operatic conventions aside, Blue Tiger Music Theatre's success with the show at Aberdeen's 1998 Kaleidoscope Festival has resulted in a SAC funded tour to venues throughout Scotland. It's also landed them a commission from the Scottish International Children's Festival to perform their production of Hansel and Gretel in May this year.

The company's founders - Simon Hart, director of the Puppet Animation Festival, Pete Stollery and Shona Reppe - set up Blue Tiger to bring musical theatre into schools, and are well aware of its appeal: ‘Music theatre is very flexible as it combines a variety of artforms,’ says Hart. ‘It also provides an excellent introduction to live

performance.’

Drawing on rich pantomimic traditions, The Magic Flute retains the fantastical edge of Mozart's original opera. fusing colour. music, puppetry and slapstick to tell the story of Papageno. who is rescued from the clutches of a menacing dragon by the woman of his dreams, Pamina. 'The underlying message of the show is that looks can be deceptive and bravery often comes in the most unlikely forms,’ adds Hart.

Long live girl power. (Helen Monaghan)
