Bruce McLean Works 1969-1999 Until Sat 26 Feb. Free. A survey of the work of Bruce McLean comprising three areas: public artwork, retrospective and new paintings. Public Projects looks at McLean’s interest in architecture, sculpture and three dimensional space featuring a life-sized walk-on model for the Lawthome Primary School. Retrospective works include Masterwork 1979 and also on show, two new paintings created in 1999. See review.

A display of the Royal Mail‘s specially commissioned stamps which looks at British achievements over the past 1000 years. The exhibition features works by David Hockney and David Gentleman, a special stamp featuring Our Dynamic Earth and a collection of photographs taken by local people which documents life in Edinburgh in the year 2000.

On show are early Eskimo art featuring small figures, carvings and tools discovered during archaeological excavations in Siberia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland.

Dream Machines Sat 5 Feb—Sun 26 Mar. Selected by artist Susan Hiller, this exhibition brings together a wide range of work from early surrealist automatic drawings to recent works in sound and video. Based on the theme of the transformative power of art, the show presents work which aims to induce the viewer into a state of reverie, hallucination or transcendence. Among the impressive international line-up of artists are Brion Gysin and Ian Somerville, Douglas Gordon, Gilbert & George, Alberto Giacometti, Eva Rothschild and Jane and Louise Wilson.
