I Pousey Cafe at Air Organic. 8—11pm. Free. Weekly. Shifting up a gear after the move from Sunday nights, the Jcngaheads get you stoked up for a night out with a mixed bag of beats, from electro through to house.
I Phatboy's Kitchen at McChuill’s Way Out West. 8pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. Hip hop, breaks and beats courtesy of G Man and The Wax Monkey, with the added attraction of live graff writing and breakdance crews on occasion.

Top notch house, garage and trance residents from lan Thompson and David Gilmore, renowned for keeping the crowd on their toes and dropping the odd surprise track. In a bid to encourage new talent, the residents step down between 8pm and 11pm, turning over the Technics to up-and- coming DJs. Call the club on 204 0101 for details of how to participate.

I Breakin‘ Point at The l3th Note Club (basement). 9pm—3am. Weekly. Free before midnight; £2 after. As the name suggests, an evening of electronic breaks and beats.
I Casino Royale at The Apartment. llpm-3am. £4. Weekly. Bossa nova beats, Hammond grooves, soundtracks and lounge core from your hosts Frankie Savaloy and Kirk St Moritz. Additional entertainment value added by the Bedazzled comedy collective and Monty Cantsin of Bear Room fame.
I Columbian at The Asylum Back Room. 8pm-1am. £1 (free to CUSU members). Weekly. Music with breaks, from hip h0p and big beat to soul and funk.
I Cop at Archaos. llpm—3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. Absolutely colossal student night, with Vance and Cl supplying hard partying house anthemics in the main room and daft classics from Tam Coyle downstairs. As ever, things are livened up by the Archaos

I Dazed 8: Confused at Qudos (Queen Margaret Student Union). 7.30pm—2am. £2 (£1). Students and up to four guests. Weekly. Live music every week front aspiring local talent until around 10.30pm, when the residents take over, spinning a retro set encompassing funk, soundtracks and indie classics.
I Freedom at The Shed. 10pm—3am. £3 (£2). Weekly. Paul N’Jie with a smooth mix of garage. funk and commercial house.
I Pimp at Planet Peach. llpm-3am. £4. Weekly. Steve Gaston pumps out the funkiest disco and lightens the blend with the occasional kitsch classic at this new night.
I G.M.T. at Bonkers. 11pm—3am. £3. Weekly. Live music, naff student tunes and absolutely ludicrous drinks promos make fora fun night out, of sorts.
I Go Bang at Reds. 11pm—3am. £3. Weekly. A new night from the team behind the mighty Optimo featuring brand new talent in the form of GK Machine, Glenn C, Jay Hay and Guy who spin a varied techno selection of 4/4 sounds, rather than the unholy mess fans of the sister club have come to expect.
I Hi Karate at The Glasgow School of Art. 10pm—2am. Free before llpm; £1.50 (£1) after. Andrew Divine and Neil McMillan get dirty with ragga, hip hop, two-step, electro and whatever else takes their fancy, all shot through with a serious dose of the funk. The Karate crew also find time to produce an occasional newsletter to keep the kids up to date and, for online types, the Karate website should be up and running before long at www.hikarate.freesen'e.co.uk.

I Life at Life. 10pm—3am. £5. Weekly. The newest and prettiest addition to the Glasgow club scene, Life occupies The High Courts formerjailcells and is aimed at a dressed-up crowd with a relaxed attitude. Thursdays have an R&B flavour with tunes from Paul Traynor, Naeem and Blues '11 'Soul magazine’s Stuart McCallum.
I MFI at Universe (Coatbridge). “pm—2.30am. £4 (£2). Weekly. Big telly man, Ewan MacLeod and DJ Bob with a disco-tinged selection of house old and new. I Now Is That What I Call Music? at The 13th Note Club (upstairs). 9pm—3am. Free entry before 11pm; £3 after. Weekly. A peculiar mix of independent and electronic,
with the em hasis on eclectic choices.
I Salsa Sa rosa at Havana. 10.30pm—3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. Top notch Latin sounds, with all hip-shaking genres covered.
I Skint at The Cathouse. llpm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. Tough chemical breaks and beats, rock and indie for a studenty crowd. I Skycop at Sky bar (Archaos). 11.45-3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. The posh bit of Archaos thrills to the deep house stylings of Ryan Kerr as the regular student night packs them in downstairs.
I Special Favours at The Glasgow School of Art (Vic Bar). 10pm—2am. £1. Weekly. A brand new evening from the self-proclaimed ‘goddesses of sound’ DJ Mingo-go and UT Bosom, who promise to provide everything from naff pop to cheesy beats via sleazy electro.
I Tune! at g2. llpm—3am. Free entry before 11pm; £3 (£2) after. Weekly. Simon Morrison and Andy Horn select brand new house, trance and lbiza favourites to jog the memory at this new night.
I Tunnel Thursdays at The Tunnel. llpm—3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. Tunnel regulars Kevin McFarlane and Scott Mackay, plus Lisa Littlewood in Room Two spin house for a dressed-up crowd of students.

Kool DJ Herc
The orthodox history of hip hop starts with the old school, presided over by names like Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore, who brought the underground to mainstream attention in the early 805. The old school could never have come into being, however, without the efforts of one Bronx block party DJ.
- ‘ '4 ~r’ Hip hop legend Kool DJ Herc invents the break
One night in 1973, Kool DJ Herc invented the break: he was the first person to cut from one record to another, homing in on the eight or sixteen bars of unadulterated rhythm that really matter. In short, he unleashed the potential of the turntable as a creative tool, rather than a means of reproduction, and made people realise that records were not only recordings, but building blocks from which new music could be made. Essentially he created the concept of sampling
before the invention of the sampler.
Herc's story starts in Jamaica in the early 605: 'Not too far from where I lived there was a dancehall, and we'd be there as kids playing marbles, seeing all the preparations for a dance — the posters going up, the guys bringing the sound systems on handcarts. Then at night the zinc fences would be vibrating with the heavy bass.‘ After moving to the Bronx, Herc applied the sound system principle of gaining kudos by playing the hardest-to-find tracks, like ’Apache' by The Incredible Bongo Band and anything by James Brown — the breaks that
underpinned hip hop until the mid 905.
Today, Herc takes a low key view of his contribution to music. 'Well, you know, I was watching the party going on around me, and seeing that people were waiting for some particular part of the record and I just, y'know, decided to get two records and run those particular sections together.’ And did this seem at all significant at the time? 'Well, no, at that time we weren't thinking that far ahead. I Klass at Destiny. 10pm-3am. £2 before 11pm; £3 after. Weekly. Casual night at the new wrought-iron exhibition-cum-club, with commercial sounds. This is the only time when denim and trainers are acceptable apparel here, so you don’t have to iron your Ben Sherman.

I Bump 'n' Hustle at Babaza. 6pm-3am (Dls from 11pm). Free before 11pm; £5 after. Weekly. Paul Traynor and Jamie Strang of Archaos fame with fine and funky R&B cuts, hip hop and some classic soul and funk thrown in to keep the capacity crowd going. Arrive early to avoid disappointment, as this is one of the busiest regular Friday nighters around.
