MODERN REVlVAL

Writer's Cramp

Edinburgh: Royal Lyceum Theatre, Fri 14 Jan—Sat 5 Feb.

John Byrne's satire on struggling literary types, which first hit the stage in 1977, is set for a revival at Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum. John Bett, who appeared in the original production at the Calton Studios, is directing the three-hander with the cast of Jimmy Chisholm, Paul Morrow and Michael Mackenzie. The play by the writer of such Scottish standards as The Slab Boys trilogy and TV’s Tutti Frutti - is set after the death of Frances Seneca McDade, leading light of the Nitshill Writer’s Circle, as bereft colleagues struggle to recount the life of this literary colossus. But after more than a decade of astonishing success in the real life field of ScotLit, does Bett think this satire on all things bookish still has comic potential? 'There have been

enormous leaps forward,’ he concedes, ’but I think this is a satire on artistic pretensions which we’re all guilty of. There are moments in the play when I think: "Oh God, I could have said something like that".'

The new staging will feature a complex set featuring giant books, says Bett. ’There’s a metaphor for these pygmies trying to walk around in this giant world of art, which they don’t really understand.’ The comic rivalry between characters will be stepped up and there will be a new musical element with cellist Ron Shaw appearing on stage. ’lt’s quite a busy show,’ Bett explains. ’l'm extending the music and extending the visuals, so it‘s a more complete evening of theatre.’ (Moira Jeffrey)
