Psy Phi

'The music is an obsession for us.’ says Paul Cawley of his monthly night Psy Phi. ‘We always try to be super upfront as much as we can and keep the music exclusive.’

The night emerged out of the Art School Phar Out sessions and has been at the Subby since '97, each month pushing out the best of break-based music with a hefty chunk of hip hop at the centre. Cawley and Psy Phi partner Alex Horton had enough conviction in what they were doing to book the names well before they made it onto the covers of the dance magazines, taking the risk of losing serious money to get the right people for the club. They had the likes of Jurassic 5, Kruder 8r Dorfmeister and the Grand Central mob way back. and they've created a boundary breaking environment of creativity.

'We've made lots of friends all over the world that really rate the club and respect the fact that. financially. it might not be worth doing,’ admits Cawley. 'But we make it work. getting sponsors involved. because noone would take the chance to put these people on. We're prepared, though, to put our necks out for some of these people, and this year we've managed to consolidate it.’

They got the pick of the date for the Gilles Peterson tour and after playing the night. he said it was the most sussed crowd he's played in front of for a long time.

The club gave Cawley a stepping stone to set up his own label, Fenetik, in conjunction with Soma, but selflessly hasn’t used the night as a showcase for the label. Sure. he and Horton play the records, but there's never been a mention of the label on any artwork or sets from his artists. 'I don't want it to seem like some big club with all my pals.’ he says, even though it easily could be if he wanted. But he doesn't. It's all about the music and then some. (Rory Weller)
