Top Girls

Madonna sang about the material world. Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister. In the 805, it became possible for women to achieve more than ever before.

So. naturally, when Marlene is promoted, she invites some of the most remarkable women of the past 1000 years to help her celebrate. And guess who's coming to dinner?. Just for starters. there‘s Joan, who became Pope in the ninth century and Lady Nijo, who stood up to an Emperor. At the same time. Marlene struggles to conceal a secret which could shatter everything she has achieved.

Caryl Churchill‘s highly original drama is a blistering attack on the social and political forces that women have struggled against for centuries. a celebration of courage and a spotlight on the lonely plight of women who adopt the worst traits of self- made men.
