Weller gets the low-down on a man who: really talkln' loud. Name? Gilles Peterson.
Age? 34.
Place of birth? Switzerland, to French parents. - Occupation? DJ, broadcaster, label boss ('Talkin' Loud) and fanatical Arsenal supporter. . 7
How did he start off? As a teenager growing up in the south London 'burbs, he got hooked on the soul sound of pirate station Radio lnvicta and started religiously going to the soul all-dayers. He loved it so much he set up his own transmitter in his garden shed, lending his services to lnvicta.
Pretty good for a kid still doing his 0 Levels. Too right. He got
heavily into the music and made a name for himself DJing at parties around London. When he was old enough he graduated to the Electric Ballroom in Camden with the Friday night Jazz Rooms, specialising in the more alternative sound.
Did he stick with the radio? The rising star was asked to play on the Mad On Jazz show at Radio London, but when it became GLR his show got canned. Surely a blow? No chance; he set up his own pirate called K Jazz and then went to Jazz FM. To help subsidise his radio work he ran a night called ‘Talkin' Loud and Sayin Something' at Dingwalls, wilfully mixing up jazz, soul, funk, rare groove, Latin, hip hop, techno and house. I
What next? He set up the Acid Jazz label ‘for a laugh‘ and ran it for a couple of years before being given the chance to take it to the next level by hooking up with the major label Mercury and calling his new imprint 'Talkin' Loud‘. It has brought us the likes of Galiano, Young Disciples, Roni Size, Nu Yorican Soul, United Future Organisation and 4 . Hero. And he still had time for the radio? He was at Kiss until the end of last year ' when he hit Radio 1. His show is , syndicated round the world and he continues to be one of the freshest, most inspiring DJs on the radio.
