This is the latest addition to our National Museums and the only one dedicated solely to Scotland’s history and heritage. The building contains five thematically-arranged exhibitions, moving from pre-history, through the Industrial Revolution, to the present day, at which point national heroes such as Billy Connolly and Elaine C. Smith get involved.
NEWHAVEN HERITAGE MUSEUM Newhaven Harbour, 551 4165. Mon—Sat noon-5pm. Free. Memorabilia and reconstructed scenes tell the story of Newhaven and its sea-going heritage, from its origins as a naval dockyard to its continued use as a fishing port. Photographic Memories Until Thu 30 Sep. Photographs by Hill and Adamson, taken in the 18405 and contemporary portraits by Miles Tubb, linking past and present generations in Newhaven.

Sentimental Journey - A History Of Souvenirs Until Sun 9 Jan. From the earliest forms of souvenirs dating from Pilgrim times to the tacky seaside kiss-me- quick hat, this fascinating exhibition traces the history of the souvenir with a display of over 500 objects.
Hisashi Momose - Paperworks Until Fri 12 Nov. (Ivy Wu Gallery). Paper works by Japanese artist Hisashi Momose.
Beyond Bounds - Containers Until Tue 4 Jan. The first stage of a four-part exhibition focusing on artists’ books. Containers features experimental bindings as diverse as pigskin and aircraft wreckage. Part two, Inside/Out runs until Fri 1 Oct and features the work of artist-in-residence, Les Bicknell who makes art book installations from paper and textiles.

Tacita Dean - The Sea. With A Ship; Afterwards An Island Until Sun 7 Nov. Shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1998 and best known for her 16mm films, Tacita Dean creates large format, chalk on blackboard drawings inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Her short film entitled ‘The Structure Of Ice’ (1997) is screened at selected times.
Olafur Eliasson — Your Position Surrounded And Your Surroundings Positioned Until Sun 7 Nov. Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson creates a specially commissioned installation for the gallery, using light and simple materials inspired by man’s perceptions of the natural environment.
Richard Long: Centre For Artists Books Exhibition Until Wed 17 Nov. A selection of publications by Richard Long featuring a number of early are rare books.
