Known for his part in the huge techno outfit Underworld, Darren Emerson is also a DJ and producer in his own right and is old friends with the Slam boys. Rory Weller gets the lowdown.
I
Name Darren Emerson.
Occupation One third of Underworld and Lemon Interrupt, DJ and producer. Place of birth Essex.
Age 28.
How long has been doing this? He’s been a fan of electro since he was 14 when he bought his first set of decks. He DJ'd at clubs in Southend before graduating to Limelight and The Milky Bar.
So how did he hook up with the Underworld boys? The band had been through a few changes since Hyde and Smith met at art school in the late 805. Weird experimentalism to rock and funk. To move the sound on Rick Smith decided to get a young buck in to vibe the sound up. His brother-in-law knew Emerson who joined the band and three albums later (including the most recent. Beaucoup Fish), it’s all going swimmingly.
Was it always going to be music for Emerson No, he was working as a city futures analyst before taking the risk of joining the band. Possibly the right decision.
He's OJing at the Slam - promoted night Relief. They've got a bit of history, haven't they? Too right, Emerson was one of the first guest Dis at Slam's orginal nights, and as well as mirroring their careers (up to a point). he has also tended to have the same haircut at about the same time.
So they're like bezzy chums then? He says of the Slam crew, 'They‘re really good mates of mine, I’ll go up there quite a lot even when I'm not working and just hang out.’ He and Slam's Stuart McMillan even went on holiday to Antigua a couple of years ago. Bet the holiday snaps are something to behold. What does he say about the Scottish punters? 'The Celts always seem to know how to enjoy themselves,‘ he says. 'When I come up I always know it's going to be a hard party.’
