One of the masters. Jones was instrumental in redefining the role of the drummer in the jazz ensemble in the early-60$ John Coltrane Quartet. where his fiery passion and virtuosity provided the launching pad for the saxophonist's explorations. Elvin, one of three famous brothers from a Detroit family (the late Thad and Hank are the others), remains a ‘ powerhouse at the heart of his own Jazz Machine. (KM)

The concert featuring the undisputed queen of Cuban music is sure to be one of the hot tickets in this year's festival, and advance booking is definitely recommended. Cruz played at the Royal Concert Hall on her last visit to the festival. but the Fruitmarket will provide space to dance, and should prove a more suitable venue. Singer Jose Alberto shares what ought to be a spectacular double bill. (KM)

Jose Alberto. known as ‘El Canario' (The Canary). For those with the stamina. DJ Simon Hodge of Club Latino takes over at 10.30pm. spinning discs into the sma‘ hours.

Vibes player Mike Maineri has been the common thread in the shifting line-ups of both Steps Ahead and its predecessor. Steps. and he is joined here by a stellar line-up. featuring saxophonist Bob Berg (a star of the festival in his own right in the past). pianist Eliane Elias. bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Peter Erskine.
