Glasgow International Jazz Festival takes place between Wed 30 Jun-Sun 4 Jul. Tickets for all events (other than those which are free) are available from the Ticket Centre, Candleriggs, 287 5511. Stand-by tickets for unemployed and students (priced £5) are available 30 minutes before doors open.

The Art Ensemble burst out of the free jazz ferment of the 605 with a distinctive visual as well as musical identity. The African-style painted faces — and Lester Bowie’s famous lab coat — remain trademarks, while the band's musical boundaries have both expanded and moved more toward the mainstream over the decades. For many listeners. the more informal atmosphere of the late night club is the essential jazz experience. although it can be noisy off- stage as well as on if you are really intent on listening as against hanging out. Jam sessions featuring major names in the festival are not unknown. however. and Fionna Duncan and Her Trio provide high quality entertainment. with or without guests. No advance tickets.

Ensemble of Chicago return to the festival with their characteristically colourful take on Great Black Music. The band have remained remarkably intact since emerging in the late 60s ferment of the Chicago free jazz scene. Only Joseph Jarman has departed since that time (and that only in the current decade). leaving the core line-up of Lester Bowie (trumpet). Roscoe Mitchell (reeds). Malachi Favours (bass) and Famadou Don Moye (drums).

If you thought the days of the fusion supergroup had passed, think again. Vertu resurrect the concept in a band which combines two of the big names from the first wave of early 70$ jazz- rock-funk fusion, bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White, with three new- generation fusioneers - keyboardist Rachel Z. violinist Karen Briggs, and guitarist Ritchie Kozen.
