Rae And Christian

Three-and-a-half-years ago Steve Christian stuck his head into Mark Rae's office-cum-studio. 'I went in and told him what he was doing wrong and he told me to piss off,‘ he laughs. From such confrontational beginnings, the formidable Manc production duo Rae and Christian were formed. Their debut album Northern Sulphuric Soul released on the Grand Central imprint was the sleeper hit of 1998 - a fresh blend of hip hop, soul, jazz and funk. Although the follow up won't be finished until the end of the year, Rae and Christian are on tour again - this time to promote ’All I Ask', the second single from the album to feature the honey-toned vocal of soulstress Veba. The core of Rae, Christian and Veba will expand to a seven-piece, including

a flautist, for gigs.

'On stage, it all starts revolving around Veba in her songs, then there's some freestyling, then a few rap songs, a couple more freestyles then a glorious ending and we all go and get very pissed,’ explains Steve. 'We know it's going to work we've done it all before. Particularly the getting

pissed part.’ (Simone Baird)

3 Rae and Christian play at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, Fri 79 Feb. ’A/l/ Aslt’ is released on Grand Central, Mon 75 Feb. Northern Sulphuric Soul is out
