The awesome Japanese hip hop producer DJ Krush makes his first visit to Scotland and many are anxiously awaiting him, not least Rory Weller.

Name? DJ Krush.

Age? 36.

Place of origin? Tokyo.

Is be any good? Well, The Virgin Encyclopaedia of Dance Music describes him as a 'leading figure in the Japanese hip hop scene and one of Mo Wax Records most influential artists'

How did it all start for Mr Krush? When he was growing up, he was pretty much a juvenile delinquent, involved in gangster gangs, truanting, fighting, doing drugs and getting arrested.

What turned it around for him? The moment he saw the early 80s legendary hip hop Culture film Wi/dsty/e he decided he wanted to be a DJ and set up the Krush Posse with like-minded friends in '87 before going solo in '92. What. a hip hop scene in Japan? Well, no actually. He had to learn absolutely everything himself, just working out what the guys on Wildsty/e had been doing.

So how did he get noticed outside Japan? He had little Western recognition until James Lavelle at Mo Wax put out a double side EP in '94 with Krush and DJ Shadow. The same year Mo Wax released Krush's Strictly Turntablized album which debuted at number two in the NME indie chart. Where did this big break take him? He undertook remix work for artists as diverse as Galliano and kd lang and collaborated With the likes of Guru from Gang Starr and DJ Cam.

Was language a barrier working with these people? He speaks absolutely no English and communicated in the studio with hand gestures and facial expressions. He thinks maybe when he was at school he shouldn’t have spent so much time playing mah-jong and smiling glue.

a DJ Krush performs live at The l3th Note Club, Glasgow on Thu 71 Feb. His new album Kakusei is released on Mon 8 Feb on Sony.
