WWW Pumps the facts to a” on Carl Craig.

flame? Carl Craig.

Age? 29.

Occupation? Owner of Planet E records, techno producer, DJ (although he's been cutting down on this).

Home? Detroit.

Alter Egos innerzone Orchestra, BFC, Paperclip People, 69, Psyche.

labels worked for? Essentially: Transmat, Fragile, R&S and his own labels Retroactive, l Ner Zon and Planet E.

did it all start? He got into making music banging out tunes on his guitar. He was a big fan of Prince, Led Zeppelin (as well as The Smiths rather bizarrely). Soon though, he heard people like Derrick May'playing tracks like 'Nude Photo‘ on his local radio Station and he was absorbing the likes of Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Depeche Mode. He reckoned he had to learn how to make this music.

What did he do? He enrolled in an electronic music course, and his mum and dad saved up to buy him a Synth. Then he had a few lucky breaks. His cousin had made a track with Juan Atkins and he played around with the equipment they used. A friend then introduced him to Derrick May who was so blown away by him he whisked him off for a European tour.

Was this good for him? Well, he supported Kevin Saunderson's Inner City and started work with May, producing .Mark Moore and ending up remixing his legendary Rhythim is Rhythim 'Strings of Life’.

So did he come back to Detroit a star? Not really, his studio was in his parents' basement and he made money working in a copy shop.

What happened next? He set up his Retroactive label and later Planet E, released a bunch of tracks under a whole host of names including his '92 ‘8ug In A Bassbin’ as Innerzone Orchestra which the likes of Bukem and Goldie were playing at 45 two years later, making it a seminal breakbeat

producer and DJ.

But he quit DJing? Pretty much. He thought it was taking up too much time, and he said he wasn't getting booked at enough places like the Sub Club. (Rory Weller)

Carl Craig plays live as Paperclip People at The Sub Club, Sat 10 Oct.
