Sean McCarthy gets the lowdown on the doyen of the deep, Murray Richardson.
Name Murray Richardson
Real Name Er... Murray Richardson. But he does record under the slightly more intriguing handle of Spacejunk. Occupation Rising star and renaissance man of the east coast house scene. On a mission to ’keep it deep', he is no stranger to adjectives like ‘soulful' and 'experimental'. Currently making foundation-shaking vibrations around the city and beyond.
Age 28.
Attitude Not one for the remote elitism favoured by some DJ types, Murray’s ability to keep with the vibe and place himself on the dancefloor suggests that this is a man who loves what he does. Previous occupations A lucrative but ultimately less fulfilling career in retail, ensured the unstoppable trajectory from the shopfloor to the dancefloor.
Past form Gained a solid dance education at Streetrave’s legendary 'West Coast Jams' as a youngster. Developed his unique funky sound during his residency at The Honeycomb's Zodiac night. Murray has gone on to some prestigious guest spots — DJing at Drop The Bomb, Colours and at UZ‘S Kitchen club in Dublin. Seems he’s been spreading the deep vibe wrdely. Music-making moments Since winning Muzik magazine’s Bedroom Bedlam competition and broadcasting a live mix on Radio 1's Judge Jules show, he has recorded his Spacejunk debut, ’We Came In Peace' which is out at the end of this month on Low Pressings.
The future Plans include his own label, more DJ appearances and more vinyl appearances to add to an already busy schedule as head of his own promotions company and part-timer at Edinburgh's Finiflex studios. This is one busy motherfucker.
What can you expect? DJ-wise, an eclectic mix of quality house tunes, with a very British kind of flavour. Vinyl-wise, expect uncluttered rhythms, saxophones and a funky feel too-er missus). (Sean McCarthy)
Murray Richardson has residencies at Rebel Waltz at City 2, ehl more, Normal and Triptonite North, see listings for details. Space/unk’s ’We Came In Peace’ is out on Mon 28 Sep.
