Waves In, Particles Out Glasgow: CCA, Fri 24 Oct—Fri 5 Dec.
Untitled: Henrik Hakansson talks to the animals
Every second we are bombarded by particles. Invisible, they penetrate our bodies as they crash their way around the physical world.
For Waves In, Particles Out, at Glasgow's CCA, curator Toby Webster has brought together ten artists who use sound in their work. The six-week rolling programme of events confronts a major sensory prejudice in contemporary art — in the generic gallery. sound regularly complements the visual, but you rarely hear anything in isolation. In Waves In, Particles Out ,
the opposite will be true.
Dubbed the 'new Dr Doolittle', Henrik Hakansson is inspired by insects. The Scandinavian has captured stick-insects on video in past work. This time, he is broadcasting ‘communicative sounds' made by insects, pumping
them from speakers around the CCA.
Using sampling and mixing gear, Owada will explore musical structures in the rock idiom. Go on, shred that air guitar thing baby. Tearing off the roof, the group’s adventurous scales should complement Panasonic, a duo featuring llpo Vaisanen and Bjork’s remixer Mika Vainio. Their rhythmic music uses mathematically generated waveforms and pure tones.
Another artist-musician, Mary Redmond, will attempt to animate four sculptures made from everyday objects. Hooked to a computer system, in- built speakers will act as vocal chords. Using what is termed directional sound, fluctuating patterns will then link the objects, creating an illusion of
conversation.
Jonathan Monk's The First Thing I Heard Today will be constructed on-site during the show. As a testament to sound's myriad of forms, early morning inspiration could be anything from a lowly fart to a soaring jet. That could
be some racket. (Paul Welsh)
