Danilo Perez may not be a name which strikes an instant chord of recognition on this side of the Atlantic, but the young Panamanian pianist made one of the best records of last year in his dazzling Panamonk (Impulse). It

incredible. At the same time, his music is a middle point for combining jazz With Latin rhythms, and I was trying to link up all of those things in an organic way.’
Perez opens a night devoted to Latin jazz, but is a little wary of that catch-all phrase being applied indiscriminater to the rich variety of idioms and rhythms from the southern half of the Americas and the Caribbean.
’1 think we need to be aware of not falling into a formula. When you say Latin jazz, it should be a big statement, not just a marketing concept. What I’m domg is more jazz Latin, trying to incorporate Latin rhythms into jazz. The perception of Latin jazz is still very narrow — it's important to remember that what I do is only part of a very large culture.’ (Kenny Mathieson)

[I has altnost become traditional to open this festival with the great Ayr-based guitarist. but they ring the changes a bit this year by matching him with a French contingent of guitarists Babik Reinhardt (son of [)jango) and Romane. and bass player Jean-Phillipe Viret (from Stephane Grappelli's trio). rather than any of his usual contexts.
I Chaser with Groove Collective Mcl—Zwan's ()ld Fruitmarket. 10.30pm. £10. A treat for fans of the mighty New York-based funk-masters Groove Collective. who headline a live club night also featuring Glasgow's D. S. Murray Quartet. plus the Jazz Cotech dancers. and DJs.

performances from Keith Rowe (guitar). John Tilbury (piano) and Eddie Prevost (percussion).
I Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra McEwan's Old Fruitmarket. 3pm. £5. Bobby Wishart usually has his troops turned out in good order. and armed with attractive modern big band charts.
I Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau McEwan‘s Old Fruitmarket. 7.30pm. £14(£12). Hitting the high notes has been second nature to the Canadian trumpeter right frotn the start. Essentially a big band man. but this group is a nice compromise. giving him the sonic fullness and textural richness of a full band. but in a more tour-friendly ten- piece format.
I Kenny Wheeler with Scottish Jazz Composers Ensemble McEwan‘s Old Fruitmarket. 10.30pm. £12 (£10). Kenny Wheeler hasjust made one of the best albums of his illustrious career in Angel Song (ECM). but the trumpeter will be heard on this occasion as a guest of the newa constituted SJCO. another of Tommy Smith‘s fruitful creations. its aim is to feature the work of Scottish composers. but Kenny's charts are likely to figure too.

I Nat Adderley Quintet McEwan‘s Old Fruittnarket. 7.30pm. £12 (£10). Adderley‘s cornet playing contributed a great deal to the classic quintet he co-led with his brother. the great Cannonball Adderley. in the late 50s and early 60s. and his current band will reflect the continuing appeal of the hard bop idiom. The ace rhythm team of Walter Booker (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) also came otit of that era. while Rob Bargad (piano) and Mark Gross (alto sax) belong to a newer bop generation.
