I A Time To Kill ( I 5) (Joel Schumacher. US. I996) Matthew McConaughey. Sandra Bullock. Samuel L. Jackson. I49 mins. Based on an early John Grisham novel. this Irellislrly over-extended courtroom drama wastes its stellar cast on a crass-fuelled ride to cliche city. I Twelfth Night (U) (Trevor Ntrrrn. UK. I996) lrrrogerr Stubbs. Helena Bonham Carter. Nigel Hawthorne. I35 rrrins. There‘s a dark cloud hanging over the happy ending in this splendid Shakespeare adaptation by ex-RSC top man Nunn. I932) Julian West. Ileuriette Gerard. Jan Ilierorrimko. 82 mins. Dreyer's version of Carnrilla is one of the ruost poetic pieces of vampire cinema in film history. Badger and egotistical Toad to uncover a conspiracy. Jones's Python-for-kids adaptation of the classic novel is a tad self-indulgent. with some awful songs and lacklustre pacing. Ilowever. the characters and atmosphere will probably charm a younger audience not yet into their more cynical teens. Edinburgh: UCI. Borders: Pavilion. Roxy. Strathclyde: ()deon
Ayr‘.
I Witchtinder General ( l8) (Michael Reeves. UK. I968) Vincent Price. Ian Ogilvy. Rupert Davies. 87 mins. One of the best British hon‘or films ever. utterly bleak and filled with the nihilism of director Reeves (who committed suicide a year after its corrrpletion). I Women In Revolt ( 18) (Paul Morrissey. US. l97l ) Jackie Curtis. Candy Darling. Ilolly Woodlawn. Mon‘issey‘s satire on the women's movement (which manages an artistic dorrble take by having transvestites in the lead roles) achieves a genuine poignancy through the star presence of the performers. but is filmed in fairly dull fashion. The sex in the foreground is less subversive than the comic speeches in the background. and the feeling is that this is as close as we'll get to a glimpse at life in the Warhol Factory. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Words And Music (U) (Norman 'I'aurog. US. l948) Tom Drake. Mickey Rooney. Perry Como. I20 mins. Songwriting duo Rodgers and Hart are celebrated in this upbeat biopic which features a glossary of stars - Judy Garland. Mel Torme. I Zombie Flesh Eaters (I8) (Lucio Fulci. Italy. I979) Tisa Farrow. Ian McCulloch. Richard Johnson. 9l mins. Fulci's sharueless rip-off of Romero's living dead series is done with full-on spaghetti abandon. touching also on the notorious Italian cannibal sub-genre. The zombies manage to spill out of their voodoo island onto the streets of New York as the director sacrifices imagination and subtle suspense for lashings of gone. Shown in the original UK cinema cut. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
