I Anicoolt Odile Pétré is the woman behind the culinary wonders which emerge from La Cuisine D’Odile at the French Institute in Edinburgh. Over the eight years in which she has been serving up her French home-cooking. Odile's kitchen has become a very welcome fixture on Edinburgh’s restaurant scene.

Recently she has teamed up with artist Ruth Montada to produce a set of eighteen illustrated recipe cards which capture the colours and textures of Odile's food in paint. Food photography rarely captures the essence of good food. somehow the two dimensional imagesjust look dead. Montada's paintings are impressionistic in style and suggest more than a straightforward photograph ever could. You can plan a complete meal using Odile‘s cards. with three recipes for all the courses from soups and starters to tarts. fish courses. three tneat dishes and. of course. the desserts. The recipes are clearly set out and easy to

use while the abstract representations of Odile’s dishes look good enough to eat. The cards are folded and have a blank interior should you wish to use them as greetings cards.

They come in an illustrated box at a cost of £l6 plus £2.95 P&P. Order them from: articook. l.a Cuisine D‘Odile. French Institute. 13 Randolph Crescent. Edinburgh. EH3 TIT. Alternatively. they’re on sale at branches of \Vaterstone‘s.

throughout the day from pastries and coffees in the morning to a health- conscious lunch menu from midday. Come around 8pm. the bar operation is expected to come into its own. Jazz. soul and blues will add a soothing soundtrack to the proceedings.

I Canons’ Gait 232 Canongate. 556 448l. Not content with being a restaurant. pub and fine dispensary of real ales. Canon's Gait has opened up a downstairs bar which is aiming to put on regular music. Folk music is likely to be the staple diet but the odd side-dish of jazz will also be on offer. See the Music listings for further details.

I Suruchi 14 Nicolson Street. 556 6583. As connections go. this one‘s pretty tenuous but the end result sounds like a good idea. On the basis that the Portuguese were the first to bring chillies to India from Brazil (this is all true). the proprietor of the Suruchi Indian restaurant is putting on light Brazilian jazz every Wednesday night. Marcus Ford and Nick Gent will be serenading the diners who can take advantage of the new three-course menu at £9.95.
