You’re never too young to appreciate the liner things in lite, and with that philosophy in mind The Children’s Music Foundation In Scotland set out in 1994 to build the classical music audience oi the iuture. Two years oi sell-out concerts later, the Children’s Classic Concert series has garnered nothing but praise, and for good reason. Designed for 4-14-year-olds and their families, each concert ieatures a quiz (with prizes), a chance to meet the orchestra and, oi course, some wonderiul music courtesy oi the Iloyal Scottish llational Orchestra and the Orchestra oi Scottish Opera. This year’s line-up ieatures ‘Coniure Me A Concert’, iull oi wands, sorcery and ‘magical muslc’; ‘Oraw That Tune’ with Radio 2 lock lien Bruce leading children through Walt Disney’s magniiicent Fantasia, with a tie-in art
competition; ‘Sing A Song Oi Classics’, with the BSllO Chorus and a musical mini-zoo irom The Carnival 0! The Animals; ‘Fascinating Ilhythms’, where kids can help conductor Christopher Bell beat time to increasingly last
. works by Copland, Ilandel, Chopin and
Brahms; and ‘Crescendo Tutti’, where
'young musicians can bring along their
own instrument and join in.
Obviously the music is best appreciated live, but it you can’t make it along to any of the concerts, then the new CD ‘The Best Of Children’s Classic Concerts’ is a good second best. llarrated by ilautist and writer Atarah Ben-Tovim, the CO ieatures 29 musical ‘listening points’, preceded by iniormation about the composer, the style and orchestras in general. Many oi the pieces are instantly recognisable irom adverts and iilm scores, and all are easily accessible, serving as a wonderiul introduction to the world oi classical music. (Kelly McMenamin)
