To celebrate the l50th anniversary of the discovery of planet Neptune. the visitor centre is holding a series ofevents. including talks. a continuous slide show of the planet and a multi-media gallery with the latest CD ROMs on space and astronomy. I DDDltS DPEll DAY Glasgow, Sat 21-Sun 22, into 221 6061; Edinburgh, Sat 26, into 557 9387. The seventh year oi the Doors Dpen Day programme sees over 500 buildings across Scotland swing their doors wide ior ordinary iollts to have a wander around areas not norrnaliy open to the public. The programme is the country’s contribution to European Heritage Days, a Council oi Europe Initiative celebrating architecture as cultural heritage and living art.
Buildings in Glasgow ior your perusal include the Chamber oi Commerce with its renovated boardroom, the neoclassical sculptures and marbled columns oi the Royal Faculty oi Procurators library and the A listed medieval ilyndland Parish Church. Those in Edinburgh on the 26th can visit Greylrlars Klrlt, the iirst post-Detonation church in the city, Dld Moray liouse with its elaborate plaster ceilings irom the 11th century and the houses in George Square where Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir Walter Scott laid their hats.
The event takes place across the country on various dates and a call to the Scottish Civic Trust on 0141 221 1466 will give you an idea as to what’s going on in your area.

I ROCKETS TD 60 Kelburn Castle and Country Centre, Fairlie, Iorth Ayrshire, 01475 566685, Sat 21/Sun 22, 14pm, £4 (£2.50). lleach tor the stars at Kelburn as amateur rocketry organisation STAllll Research otters an opportunity ior children and adults alike to build and launch their own model rocket. Materials used include cardboard. straw, tape and, the most crucial element, a solid iuel engine. Model ltlts will cost £4 and the workshops start at 1pm running through to 4pm when the launches will tdte place. ltunning alongside this will be a iree event called Starwatch, when telescopes will be directed towards the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. Starwatch takes place in the Kelburn Pavilion at 7.30pm and, in the event oi a cloudy night, a slide show oi

I IIIID Absell Challenge Meldrum House. Info: 01786 447558. The Royal National Institute for the Blind is giving both experienced and first-time abseilers the opportunity to fling themselves down the 50m high Meldrum House in order to raise around £100 each. The organisers hope to attract up to 200 participaan over the two days and qualified staff will be on hand to help the less experienced abseilers.
SUNDAY 29

Running alongside the museum’s Africa in the Attic exhibition is this one~oiT chance to discover more about that African object which has gathered dust over the years. A panel of experts will be on hand in the Main Hall to have a peer at that sculpture. musical instrument or item of clothing. No valuations will be given.
Glenrothes
I Fiie Wedding Exhibition and Bridal Fashion SIIDI Rothes Halls. Rothes Square.0|5926l2l2l. Ilam—Spm.£l. This bi-annual event attracts over 1,000 visitors. not all of them blushing. The day is split into a wedding exhibition all day and the half-hour bridal fashion shows at l2.30pm. 2pm and 3.30pm. You should book early though. as entry to the three shows is strictly limited. Models will be wearing gowns and dresses from the top wedding retailers in Scotland with particular tips for second weddings and the mother of the bride.

Over 400 lots are expected to raise somewhere in the region of £200,000 with highlights including at Charles Rennie Mackintosh memorial exhibition catalogue from I933. a silver and enamel brooch uncovered in an unwanted bric-a-brac box valued at up to £800 and a group of four Hagenauer brass sporting figures (three female gymnasts and a male basketball player).
