INDEX FILM

Brosnan is the best Bond since Connery. and his wry smile helps our hero through his trials as he tracks d0wn the baddies who have hijacked a satellite system that can wipe the world's computers clean. Glasgow; GFT.

I Boldflngct (PG) (Guy Hamilton. UK. I964) Sean Connery. Honor Blackrnarr. Gert Frobe.

I I2 mins. The one with Pussy Galore. Odd Job. Shirley Bassey belting it out. Shirley Eaton covered in gold and a typically over-the-top plot as mad Auric plans to break into Fort Knox. Much better on the big screen. when it doesn't have to be crammed into the TV frame. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I la Ilalne (I8) (Matthieu Kassovitz. France. I995) Vincent Cassel. llrrbert Kounde. Said Taghmaoui. 85 mins. This edgy. black-and-white portrait of racral tension and police brutality on a run-down estate outside Paris won twentysomcthing Kassovitz the Director‘s Prize at the I995 Cannes Film Festival. Three ethnically mixed lads come up against the cops when one of their pals is hospitalised after a raid. Urgent. compelling filrnrnaking that's as punchy as a blow to the head. Glasgow: GFT.

I heavenly Creams ( l 8) (Peter Jackson. New Zealand. I994) Melanie Lynskey. Kate Winslet. Sarah Peirse. 98 mins. In I952. New Zealand was shocked by the murder of Honora Parker by her teenage daughter and a schoolfriend. Despite director Peter Jackson's back catalogue in slapstick gore - Bruim/cml. Bad Taste Heaven/y Creatures does not dwell on the more lurid details of the crime. Instead. it examines the imaginative fantasy worlds of the girls and the strength of their friendship in a sympathetic light. Glasgow: GFT.

I Heaven’s Prisoners ( 15) (Phil Joanou. US. I996) Alec Baldwin. Kelly Lynch. Mary Stuart Masterson. I32 mins. Based on one of James Lee Burke's David Robicheux novels. this solid Hollywood thriller boasts involved pI0tting. colourful characterisations and a genuinely shocking plot twist. Mafia. hoods. a femrne fatale and government agents crash into the hero's life when he and his wife save an illegal immigrant child from a plane crash. Baldwin‘s performance is very possibly his best. See review. Glasgow: Odeon. MGM Parkhead. Edinburgh: Odeon. UCI. Strathclyde: Odeons. UCls.

I Ileriry And Juno ( l8) (Philip Kaufman. US. I990) Fred Ward. Urna Thurman. Maria de Maderios. Richard Grant. I37 mins. The triangular relationship between the erotic writers Henry Miller and Anais Nin and Miller's wife June is the backbone of this well mounted biopic. which suffers from the slightly incongruous explicitness of Kaufman‘s previous Unbearable Lig/itlim‘s Ochiiig and the same uncomfortably slow pace. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I How To Make An American Guilt ( l5) (Jocelyn Moorhouse. US. I995) Winona Ryder. Anne Bancroft. Dermot Mulroney. I I6 mins. A multi- generational cast of wonderful American actresses in addition to Ryder and Bancroft. there‘s Ellen Burstyn. Kate Nelligan. Jean Simmons and Samantha Mathis appear in a multi-generational women's movie. When Ryder ponders over a man‘iage proposal. advice on love and men is forthcornrng from her female relatives. I mil (U) (Joe Johnston. US. I995) Robin Williams. Jonathan Hyde. Kirsten Dunst. IOI mins. Trapped for 26 years in a jungle board game. Alan Parrish (Williams) is released only when two modern-day kids throw the dice themselves. But they also unleash a stampede of monkeys. crocodiles. elephants. rhinos and other unfamiliar beasts into small town America. The story manages to get beyond its repetitive limits with a brilliantly original central idea and post- Jurassic Park computer effects that make it state-of-the-art cinema spectacle. Glasgow: GFT. MGM Parkhead. Strathclyde: ABC.

I The Juror (I8) (Brian Gibson. US. I996) Derni Moore. Alec Baldwin. Joseph Gordon- Levitt. ll8 mins. Single mom Moore gets called up for jury duty on a big mafia murder trial. but is blackmailed by mob human Baldwin into voting ‘not guilty'. Another trawl through the cliches of a very tired formula. with only Baldwin‘s curiously sympathetic villain to be recommended. All UCls.

I Kids ( I8) (Larry Clark. US. I995) Leo Fitzpatrick. Justin Pierce. Chloe Sevigny. 93 mins. Photographer Clark brings a gritty yet hip approach to his portrait of urban youth overdosed on sex and drugs. Verbally. btit not visually. explicit. the film is as bleak as it gets. as HIV positive Jennie spends a day tracking

down arrogant ‘virgin sutgeon' 'lelly. Serious issues are touched on in air unadorned fashion. but it's tip to Its Iodiscuss a way to find the solutions. (ilasgow: ()deon. Borders: I’avilion. I Land And Freedom r I5) (Ken Loaclr. ITK/Spain. I995) Ian Hail. Rosana Pastor. lciar Bollain. I09 mins. Sacked from his job. lien (Cage) drives to l.as Vegas with the sole intention of drinking himself to death. but during his descent comes across hooker Sera (Shire ). another lost soul. Figgis's neon-drenched movie captures the irresponsible euphoria and mental pain of alcoholism from a subjective viewpoint. while the astonishing performances by the leads help it transcend the surface tawdriness and delye deep into underlying emotions. Central: MacRobciI. I Leon ( l 8) (Lite Besson. France. I994) Jean Reno. Nathalie Poitman. Gary ()ldman. I l() mins. When his neighbour's family is wiped out by crooked cops on a bungled drugs bust. ice cool hitman Leon finds himself looking after the sole suiyivor twelve-year-old Mathilde. l.uc Besson's first film in English is. neyertheless. a l‘rench film in terms of style. editing and its boldness in story and theme. Kirsty Graham. l()() mins. An American scientist comes to Scotland to disprove the existence of Nessie. but is charmed by the place and the peOple. So far. so Im-u/ Hum. I Madagascar Skin ( I 5) (Chris Newby. UK. I995) John Hannah. Bernard Hill. 93 mins. llis face disfigured by a birthmark. llari‘y (Hannah) lIees from the London club scene to the coast. where he meets Flint (llill). another man escaping his past. I Mapantsula ( l5) (Oliver Schmitz. S. Africa. I988) Thomas Mogotlane. 'I'hcmbi Mtshali. l’eter Sephuma. l06 mins. However. when he is picked tip and interned with a number of trade unionists. his brutal experiences help him formulate a commitment to the struggle against apartheid. Filmed under the noses of the white authorities. this remarkable filrii is the most authentic screen representation we have of life in the townships. Glasgow: GFT. I Mission: Impossible (PG) (Brian De Palma. I’S. I996) Tom Cruise. Jon Voight. Emmanuelle Beart. l l() mins. Unlike the fondly remembered TV series which pushed the notion of teamwork. this lavishly produced Hollywood thriller is driven by Cruise's solo star power. As the only survivor of a hit on his espionage team. he races across the world. setting up double bluffs to flush out a mole.
