on the Scottish music scene in the mid- 80s. and went on to win the Scottish heat of the Schlitz jazz competition in 1986 with a style which was strongly jazz— based (and notably influenced by the Corea-Jarrett axis). but also moved into more freely structured areas. or across into a musical language which was more closely linked to contemporary composition. The group. which features Chick Lyall on piano and sound synthesis. David Baird on violin. guitar. and several other less likely instruments. and percussionist David Garrett on his unique prepared piano frame. re-formed a couple of years back. and had their debut album. Hidden Music. released last year by the experimentally inclined Leo Records. It revealed a more free-ranging. abstract sonic framework than before. and a much less direct debt to jazz, and i expect that to be reflected in this ECAT concert.

The veteran English-based American saxophonist plays tenor in a lithe. sweetly swinging style that is descended from the likes of Lester Young and Stan Getz. rather than the athletes of the hard- blowing bop school. and still does so with great swing and style. The saxman will be accompanied by a trio led by one of Scotland’s best young musicians. pianist David Milligan.
