The month-long tribute to youth jazz finishes with a man who has done more than most to encourage young players in Scotland. both as director of SYJO and now a tutor at the N11. or simply by having them play in his band. Tonight. though. the band will also include his more mature regular sidemen. Eddie Richmond and Bill Lothian. alongside young bass player Jamie Kilbride.
Edinburgh
I Alex Shaw Trio Drum and Monkey. 80 Queen Street. 538 8111. i—3prrL Free. Pianist Alex Shaw is among the handful of the finest jazz musicians Scotland has ever produced. and could probably have made a much greater impact if he had
been willing to go on the road. He preferred to stay put in Edinburgh. however. where his fifteen-year residence at Platform One became the staple gig on the Scottish scene. That run ended in December. but it is good to see Alex has wasted no time in finding another gig. Here's to the next fifteen years!
SUNDAY 28 Edinburgh
I Edinburgh Jazz Project Tron Jazz Cellar. Tron Tavern and Ceilidh House. Hunter Square, 220 1550. Confusion surrounds the EJP's regular Tron gigs. and for reasons which are largely beyond their control. The Tron moved from independent to brewery control last year, and there are now various plans afoot for refurbishment and the like. which will materially effect the EJP's plans. At time of writing. they were still awaiting the outcome of a meeting intended to clarify matters. and still hoped to launch as planned as Thurs 26 (although there is also an unconfirmed suggestion that they may run on Thursdays only for the remaining quarter of the funding year). but could not confirm either date or programme details. Let's hope for a good outcome; in the meantime, check with venue for details.
