ln-line skates: you’ve got to roll with them
Americans seem to have a flair for pointless outdoor activity. Ideas that must look daft on the drawing board are speedily developed with a view to thrills and spills and, of course, enormous profits. ln-Iine skating is yet another in a long sequence of silly American ideas whose time seems to have come. A weird amalgam of ice and roller-skating, in-line skating has been off the drawing board for a few years, but broader popularity was slow in coming. For a while, ‘rollerblades’ - a far cooler item than four-wheel roller-skates - were almost exclusively used by frustrated, rinkless ice-skaters. It’s only over the

past couple of years that everyone else has cottoned on.
That is particularly the case in New : York City, where in-line skaters flood the streets, gliding smoothly uptown and back downtown, slicing through traffic on their way to work or skating just for the hell of it. All across the United States, hundreds of thousands have taken to in-lining: roller-hockey games are televised throughout the summer and in-line skaters take their place alongside skateboarders - ready to ride ramp, or turn the streets into an elaborate obstacle course.
In Scotland, for Central Park read Kelvingrove or the Common Green on any sunny Sunday afternoon. Sure, in- line skating has yet to catch fire on this side of the Atlantic, but it’s surely only a matter of time. This past summer, Greaves Sport in Glasgow were shifting up to six pairs per day. ‘All types of people were buying them,’ says Claire Whiteford, a sales assistant in their Gordon Street shop. ‘They start at £80 in adult sizes and run to over £200, with protective gear (wrist, elbow and knee pads] retailing at £30 per pack.’
' The expense was a consideration for Geoff, a student who skates regularly around Glasgow’s West End. ‘I couldn’t afford them at first, but in-Iining is just too good to let a little thing like cash get in the way. I begged, borrowed and borrowed some more to get these,’ he says, nodding down at his jet-black skates. ‘How, I wear them everywhere; just tearing it up around town.’ (John Richardson)
