I CLACKMANNAN OISTRICT OCTOBERFEST Fri 20-Sun 29. Various venues around Alloa. Full programme from Spiers Centre Booking Office. 29 Primrose Street. Alloa. 01259 213131. Not quite the beer-fest to rival Munich's (note the ‘c' rather than customary ‘k‘). but a bevy of beers will be available at the Real Ale Festival (Fri 20. 5—1 1pm/Sat 21. 11am—l 1pm) in Alloa Town Hall. The less sedate (it says here. and who are we to argue) can whoop it up big style at a Tea Dance (Mon 23. 1.30—4pm) at the same venue. Devondale Hall is the place to be for a craft fair on Sat 28 (10.30am—4.30 m).
I GLENFIOOIC PIPING CHAMPIONHSIP Sat 28. 11am—7pm. Blair Castle. Blair Atholl. Perthshire. £5. Annual invitation piping championship with ten winners of the year‘s major piping championships. Although the castle will be closed. the restaurant will be open. lfyou can’t take the noise. you can always wander down to the local distillery for a sample of the local brew. This is usually very busy. so arrive early. Tickets on the door.

Some 20.000 Pink Footed Geese over- winter on the loch and watching them leave at sunrise is well worth the early start. particularly if the sky is clear. Ticket includes breakfast and a chance to watch the geese graze during the day.

Days Out was going to leave Hallowe'en to the Kids' section this year. but this event looks like being a bit more grown up. After a tour of the palace with plenty of creepy stories — and let’s face it. quite a bit of nastiness has gone down there over the years - you get a buffet in the Undercroft of the Palace. Let’s hope the scran is as good as the scam!
I KNITTING ANO NEEOLECRAFT FAIR Fri 27—Sun 29. 10am—6pm. Royal Highland Centre. lngliston. Edinburgh. £4 (£3). Free bus every half hour from St Andrews Square. 1 sew you weaving around among the 100 exhibitors at lngliston. We embroidered a yarn under the haberdashery in the crochet corner. 1 needled your patchwork quilt. You spun me into your tapestry. Let’s get knitted out for some catwalk action in the Tefal Steamy Fashion Show.

The final weekend of Magic and Mystery at Kelburn sees Merlin's Magic Spells. a ‘fun packed magic show for the whole family' (he won't be disappearing the kids then) indoors at 2pm and 3.30pm. There’s also loads of stuff to do around the park and in the castle. with a heavy accent on kid related activities. Kelburn closes for the winter on October 29.

The workshops held thoughout the day are always over subscribed so arrive early to book your place.
