This section gives details of selected events taking place in and around the central belt of Scotland this iortnight. Events are listed by area and then alphabetically. All submissions should be accompanied by a contact phone number for our information. Days Out compiled by Thom Dibdin.
I DUNS SUMMER FESTIVAL Sun 2-—Sat 8. Various venues around Duns. Further details from Coldstream Tourist Information Office: 01890 882607. ()ne of the smaller Borders Festivals. but none the less fun for it. During the weekday evenings. horse rideouts lead by the Duns Reiver are staged around the village. On Thursday evening there will be a torchlit procession and fireworks. On Friday evening the married men take on the bachelors in a game of Handball around the village square. The ball is said to represent the head of a Frenchman and there are no rules except that the gatne goes on until one side scores. Saturday is the main riding of the bounds.

I JETHART CALLANT FESTIVAL to Sat S. Various venues around .chburgh. One of the bigger Borders Festivals. with horse ridouts and processions. The Fortnight culminates with a grand cavalcade on Friday 7. followed by a family day at Ramparts. Abbey Place (2~4pm) and a freedom march by the King's ()wn Scottish Bordere rs at 4.30pm. Saturday S is the Jedburgh Border (.iames at Riverside Park (10.30am--5pm. £2 (50p) with athletics. sprinting and distance events.
I JIM CLARK RALLY Sat 1. 9arri -4pm.
Starts from Newton Street Duns. finishes
at Tait Ilall. Kelso. This annual race to the memory of Jim Clark. the twice world champion Formula 1 racer who was killed on the racetrack 27 years ago. sets off from outside his trophy room in Duns. This year. the main race will be preceded by a historic vehicles rally.

The 25th year of this festival boasts competitions for traditional instruments. ceilidh bands. fiddle. accordion. men and women's song and original music but not drinking. althouin this will no doubt be much practised over the weekend. The emphasis is firmly on the traditional. rather than the folk-a-delic worldy spin of other music i festivals. The Grand Concert on Saturday night includes winners from the events while the pipes get their chance to blast out on Sunday. Tickets are available on the day from the Festival Office and there is free camping and caravan parking in the i _’ , village.

A good bet tor a tine day out, the Country Fair boasts tree tall parachuting, talconry and rural joinery I demonstrations. Music will be provided by the Edinburgh Samba School, the Forth : Bridges Dance Band and the Queensterry pipes and drums. There will be lots of 1 activities and stalls, including tood, beer and soft drinks.

I SMA’ SHOT DAY Sat 1. Ilam~5pm. Various venues around Paisley. Free. Paisley's big day to celebrate the triumph of the workers over the bosses. The Sma' Shot was the white cotton used to bind the coloured threads in the traditional shawl making industry of Paisley. As you couldn't see the srna shot. the bosses refused to pay the workers to buy it. but after years of dispute the worker's finally

procession around the town. At noon. the local MP will make an address on the triumph of the weavers and the symbolic burning of the cork takes place at 12.15pm. There are live bands. stalls and other entertainments all afternoon in the centre of town.
