Isabelle. an ex-ntrn writing porn stories. meets amnesiac Thomas on the streets of New York; soon they find that his past is somehow linked to Sofia. a porn actress. and two violent corporate assassins. The patented llartley dialogue and wit is ever present. but this time there are a few filrnic jokes thrown in with references to specific genres and other movies. Edinburgh: Cameo. I An Awfully Big Adventure ( 15) (Mike Newell. UK. 1995) Ilugh Grant. Alan Rickman. Georgina Cates. 1 12 mins. Amidst dreary post- war surroundings. the naive and impressionable Stella (Cares) discovers a rnicrocosmic world of rivalry. jealousy. lust and resentment when takes ajob as assistant stage manager with a rep theatre company. Newell taps into the darkness of Beryl Bainbridge's novel. but like his previous Enchanted April and Four li’erhlingx And A Funeral. it really might be room suited to an evening at home in front of the box. I Andre (U) (George Miller. US. 1994) Tina Majorino. Keith Carradine. Chelsea Field. 94 mins. This time it's the turn of a seal to keep the kids oohing and aahing. as the lure story of Andre unfolds. Set during the early ()().s in a small fishing town in Maine. the film has all the necessary elements cute kid bonding with cute animal - and with a few adventure sequences in the plot that ptrts this fiippered hero in the Skippy/Champion/Rin Tin Tin class. I Baralta (PG) (Ron Fricke. IFS. 1992) 96 mins. Environmentally aware eco-doc in the style of K()_\'(ltllll.\'(](l!.\'l has the major advantage of having been shot in 70mm. which makes the stunning cinematography the star of the show. Beautiful footage of Planet Earth isjuxtaposed with man‘s harmful relation to it. with the Big Statement being pushed forwards by a series of powerful images. A genuine spectacle. I Barcelona ( I 5) (Whit Stillman. (IS. 1994) Taylor Nichols. Chris Iiigeman. Tushka Bergen. 100 mins. As a follow-up to .llerrnpulitan. writer-director-producer Stillman focusses on another group of young people who seem to converse solely through witty dialogue. The backdrop is interesting: a pair of American cousins get on each other's nerves in Barcelona dtrring the 70s. a time when their countrymen were unpopular because of anti-NATO tensions. I Before Sunrise (15) (Richard Linklater. US. 1995) Julie Delpy. Ethan Ilawke. Andrea lickert. 101 mins. American Inter-Railer llawke and French student Delpy are the strangers on a train who strike up a chance conversation and spend a night wandering around Vienna. The actors give career-best performances while director Linklater veers into Eric Rohmer territory with a funny. sweet and fundamentally wise movie. See review.2OGlasgow: MGM Film Centre. When Barrymore discovers she's pregnant. the trio show sisterly solidarity and set up house together.
