SURF’S ON THE UP

Surfing, pretty simple huh? A board, a Beetle, some waves and Bob’s your Baywatch extra. ’Fraid not. In order to sort out the tubes from the rimming, The List, with the aid of the Scottish Surfing Federation’s Andy Bennetts, provides its simple, sorted, eight-point surfing phactfile.
1) Surfing has taken off because people think it’s cool. ‘Like snowboarding there is a lifestyle attached to suriing. But it’s less to do with the sport than the image that is portrayed. in Scotland the surfing fraternity is very relaxed: we just adore the sport rather than playing on it being flavour of the month.’
2) It’s expensive. ‘Well no more than skiing. it’ll cost you £600 fora brand new state-oi-the-art board and wetsuit, but you can pick up decent second-hand gear for about £100. After that your only expense is travelling to the coast. because the sea is free.’
3) As Patrick Swayze proved in Point
Break, the surf can be lethal. ‘I love surfing because there is that element of speed and exhilaration. The danger, however, is minimal. I only know of one person who’s been rescued and that was because he was tired after paddling out too far.’ .
4) The sea is, quite literally, full of crap. ‘llo. In Scotland we don’t have the same problem that they do in the South because there aren’t huge populations living on top oi our best surfing beaches. No people, no crap.’
5) It’s freezing isn’t it? ‘There is no escaping that one I’m airaid.’
6) It’s pretty physical too? ‘Fitness is a considerable part of it because you have to paddle to the back of the wave and turn the board round. When you stand up and come back in you use a totally different set of muscles. In a twenty-minute section you’re going back and forward maybe ten times. So if you are in a competition which has five heats you’ll really be shattered at the end of the day.’
7) To win all you have to do is hold your balance and swivel your pelvis like Elvis? ‘liot quite. Surf ludglng is like that of ice-skating; you can see what separates the good and the bad. You’re looking for the person to perform the most manouevres on a wave. You’re looking for him not to fall offend select the biggest waves. They’re marked out of 100 for each wave they catch and they get fifteen-twenty minutes out there. Their four best waves are chosen and the points added up.’
8) Grow your hair long, dye it blond, rename yourself Brad and shout, ‘Unreeeal, Gaby’. A lot. ‘Erm, no.’ (Philip Durward)
